Need advice on used pop up with 2000 wt limit
« on: March 31, 2008, 11:34:24 AM »
We own a 2005 Toyota Sienna LE, with a Tow limit of 2000 lbs.
We would like to buy a newer used camper than our current 1979 Jayco...
But we are having trouble finding newer models under 2000 lbs.
Suggestions?  Or does anyone know of a site that sorts pup's by weight?

My Palomino Pony 280 weighs around 1300 empty and well under 2000 fully loaded. My Jeep Wrnagler also has a 2000# limit. That's just one example. Most manufacturers have at least one model designed to be towed with under 2000# limit vehicles. Don't let any dealer tell you that you can tow a 2000# model, it's got to weigh less than 2000 # when you're done filling it up. Fleetwood has the Taos and the Neon, I know Viking has one model that fits the bill, maybe two. The're out there, just keep on looking. I looked at all the manufacturers online literature, marked down the ones that we could tow, then started our search. Good luck and keep us posted.

Yeah, keep looking.  Our first pup was a 1995 Skamper with 12' box and I think it came in under 2000 lbs.  How many people are going to be camping?

When I first joined PUP, I didn't understand why people intentionally wanted to buy only an 8' or 10' box.  Then I realized that everyone's needs are SOOO different from mine.  I know it sounds stupid, but I have three kids and we'd go crazy with anything smaller.

Also, when you look up used values on NADA's site, it usually lists weight.

Most older 8 foot and some 10 foot boxes (rarely a 12-footer once loaded) are under 2,000 lbs gross weight.  Forget having many amenities either due to the added weight of those.  My 8-foot 1993 Coleman/Fleetwood Roanoke weighs in at 1,345 lbs loaded.  A plain, simple 10-footer from around the same time period would probably weigh just a bit more than that.

You can upgrade the TV a bit and put a transmission cooler in it, that may beef it up some. As for the pup, keep looking and you'll find one. Good Luck, and welcome to PUP!

What is limiting you to 2000 LBS.  The tow guide rates that vehicle at 3500 LBS.  If you have a tranny cooler installed there is no reason you can't exceed 2000 LB.

A 2005 Sienna LE should be rated to tow up to 3500lbs and should have come standard with the tow prep package.. The only way I can imagine that you are limited to 2000 lbs would be the hitch that you currently have installed. Which sounds like a Class I hitch. Even Toyota's OEM hitch for the Sienna is a Class II and is rated at 3500 lbs.

I think you could go to different manafacture web sites and look at the current models and I know that Forest River has keeped some of the same models for along time and the weights should be close.

I wanted to thank you all for your help!  The Jayco that we've got now was given to us two years ago free of charge, and it was our first camper; hence we did not have a camper when we bought the Toyota and did not get the tow package.  That is why we were limited. Nonetheless, we put in helper shocks, and we plan to add a transmission cooler to buy us a little wiggle room on that 2000 # limit, and hence we were able to purchase a 2006 viking epic yesterday!  Thank you all for your wonderful responses!
