So how do I clean out propane lines?
« on: May 18, 2008, 08:18:27 PM »
After trying to light the pilot light on the water heater for about an hour Dad said "Look like you have some kind of dirt in your lines.  See how it's trying to light then sputtering out?  Probably dirt or spider webs in there, you need to blow out the lines"

"Um, ok Dad how do I do that?"

"I don't know, I just took the travel trailer to the shop and had them fix it"

Hmmm, that would work well if I could find someone to work on the pop up but I can't.  Plus we just had 2 trips to Disney, what makes him think I have a penny left in my pocket.  If Disney knew Little Bit got pink eye at their park, they probably would have charged us for that too.

So how do I get these lines cleaned out so the water heater pilot will light?

I have begged "please light, please, it is so cold in the shower without you"

I have shamed "you don't want all the other big campers at the campground to laugh at you do you?"

I have tried guilt "Look at how much time, heart ache, and effort I put in to repairing and renovating you.  Most people would have scrapped you but I didn't and this is the thanks I get?"

I have even tried threatening "Don't make me call Cathey's because I will if I have to" and "You know, if I ripped your head and guts out, you would make a real cute utility trailer"

Still just a sputtering pilot.

Any suggestions?  How about if I stuck the vacuum in the pilot light hole? No?

I haven't tried mine yet but I got info on how to do it. You need some kind of compressor with some force behind it and then if that dose not do the trick use a pipe cleaner and evict the little buggers.

Don't know if this will help but it fixed my Water Heater issue.  Underneath my dinnette seat is where the water heater is located.  I had a rubber vinyl line coming off it and it was kinked.  Got it straight again and it's never failed me since.

I thought my lines were clogged also.

If it lights and then goes out, I would think about the thermal limiter rather than dirt in the line.  If that is not it, I would at a minimum see if the line going to the heater was getting propane.  If propane is getting to the heater, and the issue is not the thermal limiter, then I would only be concerned with cleaning the line to the pilot light.

If you hold down the control knob, will the flame burn as long as you have it held down?  Does it only go out after you release it?  If the answer is yes, then, replace the thermal limiter as that is inexpensive and if the answer is yes to those questions, then it is a high likelihood that the issue is the thermal limiter and that is very easy to replace.

Good luck with it.
