1986 159C skamper
I cranked the roof up on saturday got to the top as I turned it one last time the cable for the rear snaped and the roof fell I pushed it back up and blocked it with 2x4's for the weekend.  I have to get it reparied now.  Is this something I should do myself or what would it cost from a dealer.  I live near Joliet, IL any idea where to take it.
Thanks
Rick

Hi,

My PUP has a funky lift system...no cables, but other major issues!!

Give Cathey's RV a call - I think they can fix you up with a replacement cable already sized up.  While it isn't an easy job, a lot of folks here have successfully replaced cables and tweaked their lift systems.  Do a search for 'broken cable' and I am sure you will get a bunch of info.

Its not a fun job but is do able for the DIY crowd. Don't forget to Lubricated the crap out of the cable before you put it in though. Makes life a lot easier down the road.

Any idea how to get to it or what will need to be removed?  Can I find skematics of the trailer anywhere?

Dupreet,

Hey I called her she said Dutchman used to make the Sakamper and they havent made pop ups in a long time so they would not have parts.  My local dealer wants $100.00 just to determine the problem.  Any other ideas

You can call Dutchmen and they might be able to locate some pre made cables for your Skamper

When Dutchmen bought Aero Coach the maker of Skamper they stop making pop ups.

You can pick up cables at your local Lowe's but will have to do all of the proper measuring and clamping.

You probably have the Goshen lift system.  http://www.goshenstamping.com/index.htm

Here is the link to the lift systems: http://www.goshenstamping.com/content/lift_system.htm

Call them directly.  The support people there are great, prices are reasonable and they provide phone support.  Replacing the cable looks way more difficult than it acually is.  I just replaced mine on my 2005 Dutchman 1203.

You can find parts on other sites or make your own...don't bother.  Call the manufacturer directly it will be cheaper and made to spec.

The system will still lift the front because the cable broke on the back side.  You will understand when you take it apart.  There is a little bracket that is pulling on the springs, which is making the front lift.

Give yourself plenty of room in front and behind the camper to pull the springs out.  I ended up pulling them out of their tubes completely, cleaning them and greased them liberally with white lithium grease before re-assembling.

This is a simplier repair than it looks.  It took me maybe an hour to do the whole job.

PM if you run into any issues.

Snipe
Thanks for the advice I am still a little confused on the spring thing but i am sure I will see when I take them off.  Should I replace the springs?  They are only $24 for all 4.  Thanks

My springs were in good shape, so I didn't replace them.  Once you pull them out, judge it from there.

I would say as long as it is not rusted or broken, no need to replace.

I think that once you pull them out, you will be able to tell if you should replace or not.
