Canvas Waterproofing
« on: August 08, 2008, 02:04:01 PM »
I have a waterproofing question.

We are new to pop ups and have a few questions. We bought a new to us 1983 Sunlite Sunbird II.

We did not get an owners manuel and the company no longer exists.

How can I tell what kind of canvas we have? We are looking to waterproof our canvas and are unsure as to what can use. Can someone help us out?

Also, I anyone has more info on our type of camper or a possible owners manuel, can you please let me know. We are trying to learn all we can about our pop up.

Thanks!!!

P.S. I can post some pics of my canvas if people need to see.

Welcome sly. I have no info on your camper... maybe someone else here does. Open a Webshots and post some pics!
On your canvas, do you have straight canvas where you can see the weave from the outside, or do you have canvas backed vinyl on the bunkend tops, or possibly all over? There are many products people here use to waterproof straight canvas, usually sold for waterproofing tent fabric, some expensive, some not. Our camper has canvas backed vinyl all over and I use 303 Protectant to keep it conditioned. It costs more than most but I really like it as it is not petroleum based. You can use tent seam-sealer on canvas of both types... this seals up the needle holes where the stitching is. I'm sure others will chime in as there are many different products to condition and waterproof both types of canvas.
Also, you can survive if you don't find an owners manual. If you run in to a sticky problem, post it here with some Webshot pics of the problem area... there are people here who have forgotten more about popups than I know and someone always chimes in with fixes and answers. Pictures are worth a thousand words here especially when you're dealing with a goofy, unfamiliar part and it is hard to describe in the written word. Again... welcome to the forum!

Also curious to see the responses. We just bought a NTU 79' Puma Lynx with duck cotton canvas and would like to re-waterproof the canvas. Not sure what product to use??
Will use tent seam sealer for the needle holes...but what for the canvas walls?
Have heard of canvak, but the smell is apparently STRONG :(
Love our PUP, just want to get it ready for the campground and probable fall rain we get in Ohio!

I just use plain old scotchguard in the spray can.  Works great.

I recently waterproofed our new 2 us 96, sun valley. I went to wal-mart in the camping section and bought about 6 cans of the waterproofer with the orange lid( which is a spray on silicone) works great, no more leaks!!!
