Seal Around the Door
« on: February 15, 2009, 11:20:09 AM »
We just purchased a 1986 Coleman Columbia which is in GREAT shape. (No funky smells, which was my biggest worry). Anyways. It is all in great shape, except it is very difficult to put that little rubber seal into the groove on the door. It is very stiff. Is there trick to making this easier????

Add a photo so the actual problem can be looked at. Our Starcraft had a seal, but it wasn't real hard to replace it. We used the automobile rubber seal material.

This is the little seal that you stick into the metal groove around the door so that your canvas is hooked to the door....We just popped down the popup (haha) this morning so I can't take a picture. It's not that it doesn't work, it's just that it's stiff.

I don't have a good 'Close Up' pic of this, but is the type of seal you mean for your door? (Holds the canvas to the top 1/2 of the door)

It looks like this when installed in place. (Nice and tight too...)

Mine was also pretty hard to get started. Once going OK, I could just kind of keep it going like a zipper until that whole seal/lip was in the groove. With fingers of first hand getting the stiff lip into the groove, I followed with the palm of my other hand to press it snug and in place.

I started mine from the bottom of the door and worked my way up, and I left the bunk end canvas slacked (not yet tucked under the bunk edges, and without setting up the end bows yet) so that I had a little room to tug on the canvas at the door edge to get me started. The key was to set the door seal first and everything snugged up nicely when you set the bow ends in the bunks and tucked the canvas edges under each bunk.

Let us know if I'm even close to your problem, but I hope this helps.

It can be somewhat difficult to get that thing in the groove....

you have to pull the edge of the seal actually over the edge of the door frame and push it in the groove ...it is supposed to be a stiff edge...kinda hard to explain...

It might help if you have an extra set of hands to pull and stretch the canvas a bit so it will go in easier. IF it is cold outside it usually makes it twice as hard because the canvas is tight!

good luck....and be careful upon removal as well......the seal has to be taken out the same way or it will rip the edge right off the seal.

If you screw up that seal then you are sewing a new one onto the canvas...I know you know how to sew though!

OK, great, thanks SOOOO much. I feel better now that I know that it's supposed to be kind of stiff. I thought maybe it was going bad or something! Thanks so much!!!!

I wondered the same thing, Gene. Figured them for Decoration is all, so I didn't ask.

But now I DO have to ask something of dirtyboy.... Why doesn't your Canvas drape over the outer edge of the lower box like most I have seen? I haven't seen that before on a pop up, What brand is yours?

Is that an older Coleman with that Stepper Door I've read about before? That actually looks pretty nice, IMHO. Cowboy Camper

Can anyone tell me if this canvas to door setup is a Coleman only thing?

I have an '86 Coleman Savannah. I am in need of new Weather-Seal trim - the trim on the door that accepts the plastic/rubber trim sewn onto the canvas. The trim is starting to crack. The canvas was replaced on this camper a couple years ago and is in perfect condition. I just need the door trim.

Anyone know if I can get this part at any dealer or only at a Coleman dealer - OR, better yet, if I can order it on-line somewhere?

Thanks in advance!

Yes the door seal can be tough. I used to have to fight to get it into the door of my 86 Columbia.

I think you can order the seal from RV workshop. Bear Creek might have some as well.
