1982 Starcraft Starmaster
« on: August 04, 2009, 11:36:33 PM »
Howdy once again campers. I now have some photos up of my 1982 Starcraft Starmaster( click my camera icon). It is not finished as of yet, but I hope to be camping very soon.
Thanks to everyone for replying to my post as I have started this rebuild and have asked some screwy questions about screws, wood, carpet, sealer, and so on. Everyone has made my rebuild a lot easier. All the photos and info on here have helped out sooooo much.
I started with a $250 fixer upper, removed the canvas and removed the roof. I rebuilt the side boards and front and back boards with Cedar. We took out all of the inside luan and replaced it twice (the first one got rained on and warped), We left most of the foam on the skin. A buddy gave me alum. siding to use on the side boards. We have replaced the lights with three new ones, these have the plug that will let ya plug a fan into, and we got a new porch light too. Also, we have rebuilt the counter tops, after a bad stain job my DW fixed it with shelving paper. I know, it won't last, but it looks pretty good....  I used 1/4" steel to fix the floor were the post pushed thru (thanks to the member that posted pics of his repair). We now have our new Bear Creek canvas to install after I use Web Seal on all the seams. I will then use bedliner tinted white to make sure the old alum. top and new sides are sealed.
Once again, Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and help.

Hey T-Bone,

Nice job on the camper.  Your way ahead of me on the remodel.  My 81 canvas seems to be in better shape than yours but your rig overall is in much better shape than mine.  Im gonna use your lift post fix as 2 of mine are pushing thru the floor already and Im sure the others are not far behind.  Great job so far on what you have done.  Keep up the great work.  Soon we will both have better than new pups.

Hello,

Can you tell me where you put your battery?  Doesn't look like it goes on the tongue.

Thanks for the replys.
I planed to finish the roof today but the heat index is gonna be around 108* I might not be able to handle too much of that.

Hey fiveofun, no batt. yet. You are correct, there is no room on the tounge. There is room under the streetside dinette seat. The converter is there but there is a wall between the converter and where a batt. can store.
I have a batt. box but need to vent it to the outside. I don't really like the idea of the batt. being inside, but this may be my only choice.

Thanks for looking everyone.

Hey T Bone,

I have an 81 Starmaster origonal that has been in the family since it was new. The location of the battery undes the road side bench is the factory location. I remember my father leaving the little access door open to vent the battery. I do not recall there ever being an issue with gasses from the battery. looks great i need to start on mine needs new rear benches and canvas on road side and front bunk.

The roof in pretty much complete now. I need to touch up a few places, reinstall the a/c and vent.
I used Webseal and truck bedliner. I hope that it will seal the roof. The old roof skin has lot of pinholes so the bed liner should fill them and seal the rest of the roof.
I've added pics of the job just click on the camera icon.
Not too much left to do (the finish is in sight), next will be to add the new canvas and do lots of little things to finish and go camping.

NICE JOB!

I am working on the same kind of project.  Replacing the entire roof structure right now.  See other posts.

I will let everyone know when I have it all done.

It's been awhile but I'm back!
We had to stop work on the camper due to life in general. But atleast the finish line is in sight now!
Once I get over my muscle strain we will mount the ac and should be camping.
A few small details left to do and it's finished...

"Thank you" to everyone here and to my son and Oscar and I can't for get the DW
This has been lots of fun and a long time coming.
Please see the new pictures we added.

Man, I love the vintage Starcrafts.  Fantastic job.  Now all you need is a vintage El Camino to pull it with, lol.  Looks great.
