chirping lp gas detector
« on: September 29, 2009, 07:45:07 PM »
I apologize if this has been asked, I could not find answers, I looked.  Question is when I was breaking camp Sunday I unplugged the power cord and stowed it.  I unhooked my stove from outside and stowed it under the table.  CVlosed the valve on the tank.  After I had packed the bins in the aisle my LP gas detector started to chirp.  I could not get it to stop.  I did not smell any propane.  I tried every button on the darn thing to stop it.  In desperation I ended up pulling the fuse on the battery. Now the weird thing is I haven't used the battery all summer  because it is dead. It won't even light the lights, I just never took it out. I need the tongue weight.  Why did it stop chirping when I pulled the fuse?  Or is there really a leak somewhere.  Hope someone has an answer. Thanks in advance

I believe the LP detector will start chirping when your battery voltage gets low.  Perhaps someone else here can confirm this for us.

I'll second it!!!

Its stops when you pull the fuse because you are breaking the circuit.  Your battery may be dead, but still has enough juice that it registers with the alarm, but not enough to power anything.

Yup---it chirps when the voltage gets too low. You said your battery was dead but while being plugged in it got enough charge into it to make the detector chirp when you unplugged.

It's your battery, for sure.  I try to remember to take the positive terminal off of mine when it's parked in the yard because after a month or so, just the little green light on the LP detector will drain the battery.

We learned this over the summer, when we could hear the LP detector chirping right outside our open bedroom window in the middle of the night.  Don't tell anyone, but I went out in the yard at 2 AM in my underwear and took the hot terminal off.  [:O] [:O]  I'm pretty sure no one saw me, but I did hear some wild animals fleeing to the woods behind the house.

Thank you all Sooooo  much.  I was almost afraid to ask for fear I didn''t look hard enough.  I am relieved I don't have a leak somewhere.  What a great place!!!!!!!
