How to tell if it has the towing package?
« on: February 09, 2010, 11:03:35 PM »
DH and I are going truck shopping this weekend.  I have found two used Ford 150 crew cabs that I think are good deals.  One is a 2007 with 67Kmiles for about $14,000. The other is a 2008 with 16K miles for just under $21,000.  Both have clear CarFax histories.

My question is how can I tell for sure that the truck has the towing package?  Should it be obvious from looking under the hood?  Is there something to look for in the VIN?

When I emailed the dealership to ask if they had the towing package, they responded that they both had factory hitch.  I replied back and said that a hitch and the towing package were different and that I needed to be sure that it had the upgraded radiator, tranny cooler, etc.  They replied that they both had all the equipment I required.  I just want to be certain that they do in fact have it, and that the salesmen aren't just telling me what I want to hear.

Thanks!

I guess I would simply look for the tranny cooler and perhaps look at the rear shocks to be sure they seem to be better fit for towing (i.e. adjustable air shocks perhaps?).

The tranny cooler is probably right in front the radiator (where it goes most times, of course).  Take a look and see if there's one there.

If the thing will settle nicely when the weight's on, and it's got a tranny cooler, and perhaps if it has a brake controller already built in (though this may not be the case on that model - not sure), then you're basically all set.

If the vehicle has a factory towing package then the 7 pin wiring harness should connect directly to the vehicle wiring harness through a factory connector.  If the 7 pin wiring harness is spliced into the tail light wiring then it does not have a factory towing package.

I bought my '06 F150 used also. The tranny cooler will be easy to see. It is a long loop with fins mounted in front of the radiator. There was a relay in the glove box with install instructions to supply 12V power to the installed 7-pin connector in the rear. In addition to the 7-pin, there is also a 4-pin connector on the back hitch. Both are mounted to the same piece of molding attached to the hitch (i.e. not flopping around with wire straps).

If you have access to a VIN, you may try asking a dealer what options it has from the factory. You may need to butter them up by suggesting you would bring it there for service, etc, etc....  [;)]

Thanks guys, this really helps to know what to look for.

I found a website that will pull up a digital copy of newer ford's window stickers.  It worked for the 08 we're interested in.  That truck definitely has the tow pkg.  It wouldn't pull up the 07, so I'll go by what y'all have taught me when looking at that one.

I would look to see how the  7 pin is wired in. On  the larger  V-8 engines (5.4l), Ford puts an auxiliary tranny cooler on them in the factory, even if they don't have the towing package.  So, it's possible you'll find a cooler mounted in front of the radiator, but not have the tow package.

Oops, just saw you found the info you needed. Good luck shopping.

I'd probably go with the '08, assuming the $5K difference isn't a showstopper.  Given that you'll probably be travelling long distances in less-populated areas, I'd feel more comfortable with a vehicle that has 16K miles vs 67K miles. The factory warranty in the '08 also has a lot of life left in it.

Contact Ford Customer Relations Centre with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).  The Customer Relationship Centre can be reached, toll-free, at 1-800-565-3673.  They are available between the hours of 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, local time.

Just in case someone else reads this with the same question, here is the link to how I pulled up the window sticker.  You just need to change the VIN.  It doesn't work for older models, but has worked on everything I've tried 08 and up.

Anyone know of something similar for Chevy?  We were really disappointed with the Ford.  All I see when checking my blind spot is the post between the front and back door. I should have known, that is the same reason we didn't get a Ford edge last year when we bought our current mid-sized SUV.

Most factory tow packages have a seven pin connector in a nicely placed mount. The wiring should also run past the end of the truck towards the front not spliced in at the tail lights. Another nice thing about a factory tow package is that the brake controller plugs right into the vehicle wiring harness. All you have to do is buy the controller and the adapter. You will need to check that all the fuses are in place. Good luck finding your perfect TV. Happy camping.

I used to work for a GM dealer and the only diference on the trucks outfitted with a tow package for our line was a receiver hitch and a transmission cooler. I'd bet it's the same for FORD.
If I can't fix it, it aint broken.

The new Silverado will have a built in brake controller if it has a tow package.  I don't know about prior to the 2009 model.

Ask to take it home to show the dw so she can see it. Then run over to the local dealer instead and ask the service dept to check real quick, then go back to the lot.

The new Silverado will have a built in brake controller if it has a tow package.  I don't know about prior to the 2009 model.

We ended up buying a brand new 2009 Silverado with the HD trailering package and suspension.  It did not have a break controller built in.
