stored for winter
Well folks, we put the camper away until next year.  So, the plan is to save money this winter and come spring be able to finish it in one go.  We want to camp in it next summer.  I just recently found out that a friend of mine has an old Jayco pop-up that he wants to restore.  My wife chuckled that…

Has anyone considered installing a rear hitch (like a class 3 frame mount) to haul a bike rack?

I'm pretty sure I could make a custom thing...probably go rob a hitch off a junk yard truck/SUV, and cut/append/stretch to fit?

Isn't it just a cube-tainer from Walmart?  I want to remember seeing pictures of them with those blue containers?
I've only seen the 7 gallon aquatainers at wal-mart.  If the original one truly is just 5 gallons and a 7 gallon won't fit, Academy (and likely other sporting goods type stores) do sell a 5 gallon aquatainer.

It's been done and documented on an E3.  I'll have to search for it when I get home.
There's actually a universal rv hitch at etrailer that will extend out to 60" to span both frame members but its pretty expensive ($250+ iirc).

I don't think there are many vehicles out there whose hitches would bolt up to the E2/E3 with the 60" space between the frame members.  There would have to be extensive modifications which would probably mean it would be easier to make one from scratch.

Those hitch haulers are usually 60".  I've considered just putting one 2" hitch receiver on each frame member and then modifying my cargo hauler with 1 2" protrusion on each side.  I think that would come out a lot cheaper and will also be more stable.  You can get bike carrying components that bolt right onto a typical hitch hauler that the wheels sit in.

Found it:
http://www.popupportal.com/index.php?topic=9864.0

That would work but I'd bet you could weld in a 2" box steel crossmember right behind the bumper and then cut a hole right below the hole for the crank for a 2" receiver to pass through:
http://www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Accessories/Curt/E-9.html

That would look a bit slicker.

That two receiver idea would definitely be easier...might explore that option.  Although I could just get the bicycle wheel supports, and bolt them to the front deck...

On a side note, had it out for four days this past weekend...rained every day.  At least it didn't leak.  Camped out in my parents side yard, so I wasn't all that far from civilization.

Putting on the Load Range E STs made the towing mileage tolerable...probably got around 13 to 14 mpg pulling from the Reading, PA area to the Erie, PA area, across the mountains.  I saw probably because the pump I tried filling at shut me off at $75.  But for this same trip I normally use 5/8 of a tank empty, I only used 3/4 with the PUP.  That mod also made it handle like a dream...no wiggle, no sway, no roll; it just tracks straight as an arrow behind the truck.  You hardly know its back there on the flat and open portions of the highway.

My brakes must have finally bedded in, I have been able to gradually back the gain of my brake controller down and stopping is still the same.  I may need to pull the wheels and check things out though...I get a squeak once in a while, I get a pulsation once in a while; probably should just pull the drums and be done with it.

steved,

This weekend I had two bikes on the deck, then used my "spare tire" bike rack for the road bikes in the rear. These are light, sub 20lb bikes so did not affect tongue weight. I was able to remove the front wheels on the road bikes and they hung just fine back there.

We only had to travel an hour to the campground but was nice having our cruisers for rides into town and the road bikes for cardio work out rides up the pass and in the valley.

Here are the Yakima "fork block" mounted on the deck. $20 at local bike shop and are lockable with padlock.

Showing here the front deck with 2 town bikes, rear spare tire rack with 2 road bikes = 4 bikes for the long weekend, never used the car once in 4 days!

Happy Camping!

icsopris:  That's what I'll probably end up doing, that negates having to fabricate a frame mount.  I had a set of those mounts, but I have no idea where they have vanished too at this point (too many moves since I removed them from the trailer).

I just bought a set of popup gizmos today, hopefully they are here before our trip to Maine.

I hope this topic is for Somerset Evolution owners too  [:D]

Our E3 has the metal toy deck, and I was wondering -- do those of you with the decks try to get a cover for the whole thing (21'9"), or just the box? Seems like we should cover the deck & ramps too, but if we do, seems like the cover might pool in the middle.

We barely fit a couple bikes in our "2-car" garage. TV, PUP and two other cars sit in our driveway. Priorities I guess: at least the kegerator has a roof over its head  [8D]

I have the E1 with the shorter deck.

My ADCO cover does cover the deck.

I used and cut piece of plywood to lay on deck sloped to the top of the camper which the cover goes over.

Look no puddles or snow drifts!

Finished the first trip with our new Somerset E1.  This thing is awesome.  I've got a few mods planned, like adding an inline water heater and a hitch receiver for a bike rack, but overall I am very happy with our new camper.

Went from this:

To this (still have the JK, just didn't have it setup for the 7-pin harness yet):

Thanks for the pic icsopris! The plywood sounds like a great idea. We have an inline water heater, and use the toy hauler for bikes. The MOD I'm working on this weekend is going to be a better enclosure for the shower. Haven't yet decided if it will be hard or soft-sided, yet. Fingers crossed that the kiddos will let me get something done.

Nice looking ride(s) jkcobra!

JKCobra,

I bought the factory 7 pin harness online and installed it myself on my JK. Piece of cake. Look on Amazon.

Whats Happinin' I'm the proud new owner of a 07 E-1! Just got back from the first trip with the wife and the 7 month old and had a blast! I'm hoping to hook up with some other E-series owners and get some info and bounce mod ideas back and forth. Look forward to chatting with you folks!
