Lift System Fix?
« on: January 31, 2011, 12:43:00 PM »
I think my 98' Rockwood freedom 2280 lift system is in need of repair. This will be my second season with it and I first noticed a problem while raising the roof and I would hear a loud POP. My initial reaction was "OK that sounded like a cable breaking, here comes the roof it's gonna come crashing down", but instead it just kept cranking up( after I changed my shorts). This is my first popup or experience with one, so I'm not sure how hard the cranking should be, but it seems to me that it's too difficult. I'm in fairly decent shape and I'm winded after raising the roof. Is there bearings in the crank assembly that need to cleaned/greased. I would really like to replace the whole crank assembly cause it's been out in the elements for its whole life and is pretty rusted up but I can't find anything. Does anyone have similar or info on how to fix this problem.
Also I did a search before posting, but all I could find is what looked like different Rockwood lift systems. I'll try to post some picks of what I have.

That looks to me like a Goshen system ...

And I would guess by what your saying perhaps there is a binding issue .... maybe a need of lubricating, maybe one of the springs for a lifter is binding, maybe the winch itself.

Why don't you contact Goshen - they are real easy, helpful people to deal with - and see what they might have for advice.

Then post it back here what they said for the rest of us!

Might start by lubricating that winch,  put some grease on those gears. Maybe coat the thing with some wd-40 or similiar product. This should be done at least yearly. Also, under the camper, on the lift system is two zerk fittings (grease gun nipples). Get under there with a grease gun and pump some grease in.  Have the exact same system on my palomino, and my 12 year old can crank it up.

BH1, I have been lubing the gears, but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I will have to go out and get a grease gun though for the zerk fittings.
Another thing I noticed is when I'm cranking it looks like the gears on the winch are bent cause the big gear kind of wobbles when it's turning.
BTW is your 12 Y/O Lou Ferrigno by any chance?

You very well might be in need of a new winch.
Also, there's usually a cover that fits over the winch ... did you remove same for the photos(?)

OK, I talked to the good people at goshen tech support. They were very helpful, they advised that I get a new winch, and I should grease those zerk fittings. The parts should be here in about 3 days. Total price including shipping was about $65 and that includes the adjustable pulley that I needed too. i will keep yous updated and take some pics when the parts come in. thanx again, Bry

Flyfish, It didn't have a cover on the winch. I don't know if it came from the factory with one or if the previous owner removed it. Maybe I'll fab one up after it's all together again. Don't know if I mentioned this before but this camper spent most of it's life parked outdoors in Cape May NJ about 1/4 mile from the ocean. I'm sure the salt air played a major factor in corrosion.

The winch for my Goshen lift didn't have a cover either.  It seems to me that it would be a good idea though.

The winch on the front of my Skamper looks almost just like yours but it has a cover over it. It is a 2002 model but I bought it new in 2003 and it has mad a loud POP when cranking it up sense it was new. It is hard to crank up as well but I was told it was normal. I believe the POP is the cable on the wench drum winding up on the side of the drum until it pops off of the side and starts winding back along the drum in the other direction on the next layer of cable.
I would be very interested in anything you find out.
Good Luck!

My new winch arrived today. I have the next four days off, as long as the weather cooperates I will put it all back together and see how it works.

I got the winch and new pulley I also greased the master tube. What a difference this has made. Now I can raise the roof with one hand. Otis the guy at Goshen did say that the popping sound was most likely coming from the winch not being on center with the cable. Causing it to pile up on itself. He suggested loosening the three bolts that hold the winch on and slide it to the left or right for better positioning. Mine was only able to move about a half inch, but it did help.
