Tell me about Wisconsin Dells
« on: May 01, 2012, 09:02:31 PM »
Two adults and a 3 year old.

Is there a lot to do in the area?  Where would you recommend camping in the area?  Is it over-crowded?

We have a wedding to attend in Chicago in early June and the dells seems to be a good place to spend the rest of the week on vacation.  Any other suggestions for vacation spots in the area would also be appreciated.  Thanks!

There is a LOT to do at the Dells... if you have a lot of money. The Dells is a huge tourist trap- like Branson or Gatlinburg. A lot of people go there, but I doubt if they're at full capacity yet in early June.

The Dells themselves are pretty along the river, and there are state parks fairly close, but that's really not what people go there for anymore... they go for WATERPARKS! Some of the biggest in the world are there. It's a crapshoot whether or not it will be good enough weather to enjoy outdoor waterparks, but there are also lots of indoor waterparks, and some of them sell day-passes.

So if that's what you're looking for, you'll love it.

If you want to spend a few days in the woods and enjoy some nice hiking, Starved Rock State Park in Illinois would be closer.

Suggest you do a search here for the Dells. You'll find tons of info.

Nearby SPs are Mirror Lake and Devils Lake. DL is most popular in the WI system so many sites are already booked. ML is very close, DL less than 20 min away. Traffic can be horrendous in town. Kids love the area. Bring $$$. Every WI reststop will have coupon books that help a little.

Im not a big fan myself. If u like water parks then this one has a nice one. Other then that the little shops are junky. I dont live far from there and I try to stay away :). We were just talking about where to camp next and we all said any where but by the Dells :).

We goto Holiday Shores with 5 other families for the last 4 years. Its a ton of fun, lots to do. The Dells is a tourist trap, but can be done reasonably.

We have a 5 day trip coming up in July at Rocky Arbor SP in the Dells.. We have been to the Dells tons of times and YES it is a tourist trap... BUT we always have fun:) The shops are fun to look at for a few hours, sometimes I can find cool stuff.. Devils Lake and Mirror Lake are close and very nice State Parks.. This trip my DH and DD will be going to Noah's Ark (DD got a free ticket for reading at school....) I will be taking my younger kids exploring:) not sure what we will find but I know we will have fun.. There is a zoo/animal park going up now so maybe that would be fun.. (not sure when it will be done)

We were at the Dells in August 2008. We did the river boat tour. It was nice and relaxing and some really great views from the river. We only spent the day there before heading west.

Im from Chicago and have lost count of the times I've been there. It is a nice place to visit and the waterparks are the main theme. We once camped at Jellystone and it was a good time but we mainly stay at hotels. There is a small downtown strip which is nice to walk down in the evening and get a few things to snack on along the way. There is also lake delton which is next to teh dells and they have the better restaurants. If you go bring your life savings cause it is pricey... good luck and have fun

I grew up an hour from the Dells. All of the different water parks are nice. I feel that once you have been to one you have been to them all. They have the Tommy Barlett water show. A nice relaxing ride on the Army Ducks. Not to far from Circus World Museum in Baraboo. There is a ton of stuff around there. I love to camp at Pride of America (POA) just in between Pardeeville and Portage. POA Is a nice place as well has pool lake front and great activities.

Help!  I don't know how to use this site.  I'm sitting in the dark in a 1997 Camplite 2206 popup I just bought and I don't know how to find the power converter box so I can turn on the lights.  I plugged the long black cord into the plug and I have air conditioning, but no interior lights or refrigerator.  I downloaded the manual, (the receptacles work so I can use my computer) but it has no pictures and doesn't tell you where the converter is.  How do I ask someone on this site if they know?

Please ask your question once and be patient. I've already answered you in another thread.

For future reference, asking the same question multiple times or hijacking someone else's thread by asking an unrelated question is frowned upon.

IMO a tourist trap (but a fun one) go carting, water parks ect, once you have rode the Ducks well you have rode the ducks. The Jet Boat tour is always a hit worth the $$; we always stayed at Devils Lake or Yukon Trails, of course you have to deal with what seems like every city dweller from Chicago and traffic is horrendous on HWY 18 on the holiday weekends.
