1998 Starcraft Galaxy
« on: August 15, 2012, 03:11:06 PM »
Hi all!
New to the forum, and the wife and I are going to look at a 1998 Starcraft Galaxy. The asking price is $2500, and it includes the following:

-central heating with thermostate
-water heater
-30 gallon water tank
-sink
-2 burner stove (can be used inside or mounted to the outside wall)
-fridge (operates from 110V or 12V or LPG)
-auxiliary shower
-interior/exterior lights
-new battery
-new tires

The ad mentions that at one time they did have a mold issue on the queen side shades, but that all the mold was removed and it does not smell, but the canvas is somewhat discolored.

Does this seem like a good price? I've been unable to find too much info on this model as it seems to have been discontinued. Any additional info on this model and/or advice would be much obliged! :)

The Galaxy model continued on for a time after 1998 and then Starcraft began using model numbers instead of names.  I have the specs for the '99/'00 Galaxy models if your interested and they ought to be about the same.

Used campers always have to stand on their own wheels for condition and how they were taken care of.  That pic of the interior canvas sure looks shoddy .... like the interior canvas is in bad need of a good cleaning.

If you like the camper and layout ... make an offer.  Tell him/her/it you have budgeted $1800.00 for a camping and see where that leads - the worse that could happen is being ordered off the property!

yeah, that is the area of the canvas that had mold issues at one point. It is mentioned in the ad and they state that the price has been lowered accordingly. We're going to take a look at it this weekend, so I'll let you all know how it goes!

I wouldn't be too scared of one end of the canvas having the mold issue as just that one end can be purchased.
I would be more scared to know how the water got in there in the first place to cause the mold, was it a leaky roof? Was it put away wet at one point? etc..
Search that end of the camper high and low for any wood rot, etc.. Especially if it had a leaky roof at one time.

I should also note that I recently purchased a 97 for 2500 and it at one point had a rotted roof that was completely redone with all new wood (I can see it so I can verfiy it was replaced at one point). However the canvas is still stained:

(can see it in the first picture)
It's not as bad as what I see in the picture you attached so I don't worry about it, it doesn't leak and it isn't rotted.

Thanks Flyfisherman!

He said that it had been closed while still moist at one point and that is what lead to the mold. I'll be sure to look at the roof in that area when we see it in person.

Thanks for the specs as well!

If that's the only problem that canvas can be cleaned up in tip top shape.  Will take a little effort but when performed you can have new looking canvas - had to do  that function on mine a couple of times!  Also, the camper does not have to be put up wet from rain for mold and mildew to get started,  just people sleeping inside creates condensation and if not aired out after use, there's your moisture!

Good luck on your quest.
