1996 Coleman Top won't stay up

After our maiden voyage we parked the trailer on the driveway.  I went to pop up yesterday and the top won't stay up.  When we went on our first trip it went up no problem.  You could turn the crank and stop and it would stay wherever.  Now it just spins.  I am guessing there is a sprocket of some sort that should be catching and it is not.  

Any idea how to fix this?  I tried to raise it all the way and back down a few times.   Is there a way to get into the crank mechanism?  I can hear it I just don't know how to get to it.  

The trailer is a 1996 Coleman Shenandoah and the whole body seems to be molded plastic.

if the cable was broke it would go up even .. i know on ours there are two spokets with a chain drive the pin holdin the top gear broke and i had to go on the bottom of front edge of camper take out the self taping screws and reach up to get the gear out . just to find out i could have taken the front panel of the inside of camper and it was all there sittin in front of me .lol
on our bottom crank there is a lever that you turn to set the brake , on yours that might not be catching the gear maybe you could do like i did and get the inside panelling off and maybe see the problem better . just a thought for you ..

if a tree falls in the forest, and your at work how do you know it made noise.go campin more often you will hear it..

My Dad said there has to be a way to get to it without taking all of the outside moulding and bumper off.  I think I might just try that this weekend.  I made an appt with the rv repair shop just in case but they can't get me in until next week.  

I know the cables are fine - I can feel them all and they are all tight.
