Skamper Door Latch??
« on: July 19, 2007, 01:40:37 PM »
Where my door swings up to the ceiling there is supposed to be two latches that hold it to the ceiling, i got one but the other is missing.  It holds the door "ok" but when i pop it up and crawl in to put down the door i worry about that thing falling on my head.  Anyone know what these plastic pieces are called?  They just have a screw that goes through them into the ceiling and turn to hold the door.  They are the same as the ones above the door to latch the hinge in setup position.

I looked through some catalogs and can't find a match.  If nothing else i can get a close up picture of it later if nobody knows right off what it might be.

Thanks!

I have seen the latches you are talking about in the RV Shop here but I do not know what they are called. You might look at some of the on line RV parts houses on the internet.
My 2001 model Scamper uses the same thing. They don't hold the door up while we are on the road very well so I added a "D" ring type picture hanger on each side of the door about 8" from the end and use a strip of velcro between them to hold the door up. This works great for me.

Happy Camping!

It sounds like some sort of turnbutton.

Our Coleman and the Flagstaff use web straps with a snap on each side of the door to hold it in the travel position. I you can't find the correct piece it would be easy to fit straps there instead.

Since Skampers are no longer made (popups anyway. . .) you might try one of those clips at the hardware store that hold the top of your mirror onto the bathroom wall.  Those are similar to the clips holding the door up.  Also try looking in the section where storm door hardware might be found.  Some of those clips that hold the windows in place on a storm door are also similar and might work.

Just some ideas.  Good luck!

All good ideas so far, thanks!

I kinda like the strap idea, might have to work on that.  If there is something solid i can screw into on either side of the door i might just take something like a web belt and cut it in the middle opposite the buckle and use that to hold the door solid.  I can flip it up and use the latch that's still there to hold it up while i clip and tighten the strap.

I'll look online some more too, good to hear it was used on the later model years as well!

I honestly don't know why Skamper gave up though, these are nice solid built units.  I looks at a few different used ones before buying this model, i looked at some Colemans and others and they are really all about the same other than interior features and creature comforts.

I got this camper for $1600, yeah i know it sounds like a lot to some of you on here that can find them ultra cheap, but around here that was the cheapest one other than a $800 unit that pretty much needed everything from the axle up repaired and rebuilt.  This one had good canvas, no rot, and only a few screen holes.  I can live with the patches i put on the screens, most of the time i will probably be using the AC when its hot anyway.

Now back to some other mods and building my awning for it!

Wal-Mart has exactly the thing for this, in the camping section they have a nylon utility strap with an adjustable buckle for $1.78!  I plan on taking one and cutting it to make a door strap out of it.  That should fix the problem of the door rattling against the roof when its collapsed.
