I just recently purchased a 2003 Ford 150 Super Crew with a 4.6 and a 3.55 rear end. Does anyone have this setup ? I'm thinking about selling my Sierra and just going with this as my tow vehicle. I have a Coleman Utah which loaded weighs around 3000 lbs.

I have the 4.6 engine in my 04 Expedition. It tows great. I'm sure you won't have any problems with towing 3000 lbs. with it. My Bayside is well over 3000 and I have no problems.

I have a 2006 same set up. I just turn off the overdrive when pulling my camper, no issues.

I had a 2002 F150 with the 4.6 and it towed great. Had to keep looking in the mirrors to see if it was still back there [;)][;)]. When towing in flat areas on the open highway I left the overdrive on. But when I got to hilly areas I shut it off.

What Micky said. With 355 gears you won't even know it's back there.

Thank you all. I feel more confident now. I think it has a factory installed tow package. The overdrive suggestion was good too. It's flat in North East Florida but my favorite camping is in the mountains in Western North Carolina. I bought the truck with 149k on the odometer. If there is anything mechanically I should be aware of please let me know.

Keep an eye on the exhaust manifolds I know the 2002 4.6 had issue with them. They rusted out on mine real bad! There were dime sized holes. I wanted to replace them myself but was warned about the bolts being rusted and they would break in the head. Just be aware. Not sure if they corrected the issue on the 2003 models. Also keep an eye on the radiator support frame. I ended up replacing mine. If it does rot out and breaks you will have an issue. Inspect the rear spring shackles for rust. One of mine broke and luckily when it broke it got caught on the frame. They are an expensive item since we could only find them from Ford.

I also had the trans rebuilt at 123K because 1st gear started to slip.

Overall I loved that truck!! I miss driving it!!

It may not be that important that you bought F150 with 3.55 gear, your Utah max GWVR is 3500 lbs. My 2013 Explorer with 3.5 V6 easily tow my 2002 Niagara (3500 Lbs) so your F150 can easily do it.

I was wondering about the power though as the 4.6L I think only has 220HP. But since you guys have assured me that it tows great I'm going to forget about the low HP rating.

I had the F150 XLT Supercab with long bed and 4WD. The 4.6 had plenty of power!!!

Thanks again Gary for all your input. I went to Ford's info page from 2003 and it's rated for 6500lbs. I just wanted to hear from people that actually towed with one though because I know you guys on the portal would talk straight and speak through your own experience.

I'll jump off this thread again. I tow a 2018 Aliner Scout (1,600+ lbs) with a 1997 F150 4.6L 2wd with no tow package, 130K miles. I can tell it is behind me, but not in a bad way. I stay at 65mph on the interstate, but prefer to take back roads, if we can. We are retired, so time is flexible.

Two weeks ago, I took it took it to a transmission shop for a wellness check (after a week camping trip in Florida). Filter and fluid was changed. I had them add an fluid cooler for extra insurance. He said said it was clean inside and he would drive the truck any where. I asked about overdrive use, which I did some in Florida on flat terrain. He said as long as it is not searching, overdrive is fine.

I have a 05 explorer with the 4.6 and it has 200000 on it. I love using it to tow the pup when I am not taking the 4wheeler with us.
