Broken crank

    I have a Coleman popup. it's a Sea Pine year 2000. The pipe that you insert the hand crank into has broken off part of the nut into itself and is rattling around in the pipe. Consequently if we crank it up too tightly it will not crank down the camper top and will just come "unthreaded".

    What I wonder if any of you pros know is that pipe replaceable or what? If not what does it take to repair it?

    Is the whiffle tree the part that is broken? If so, it is about 1/2 a day and about $100.

    No it's not. It's just the pipe that you insert the hand crank into. It comes off and it never has before. It has a loose nut inside it that appears to have come off of something.

    Yes. That is it exactly. How do I get that repaired? At what cost?

    Well...

    Fleetwood says it is repaired as a assy. From the way it is assembled I would more than likely agree.

    If you want to try you can remove the roll pin, Then get a socket that is 10" long you may be able to get into the nut. Unfortunately I don't know the size.
    Another possibility is to cut off the welds on the tube to expose the nut. Locktite and torque the nut. Re-weld the tube back on. This would be a bit tough to do with out the equipment.

    I suspect buy the time you try any of the above, it would be just about as cheap to get a new assy.

    The one I have I removed when I converted it to a electric lift. I was hanging on to it just encase I want to convert back..

    Hi, I am new to PUP, but not to PU's or camping. I was reading thru all the topics and was shocked to see someone else has this problem too. We have a '95 Coleman Stoney Creek that suffered the same fate with the crank tube. As I was cranking it up last weekend the tube just started disintegrating. Our temporary soltion ( while at the CG) was to drill a new hole further up the tube, insert a nail, and pray as we continued to crank her up.( and to think, I questioned why my DH was bringing all those tools) This worked, for the situation, but is not a permanent solution. The crank tube has crumbeled and is only about 4-5 inches long now.

    Can just the tube and pin the crank grabs into, be replaced? If so, how does the old tube come undone? Just the same as described?

    We called the local dealer where we purchased the PU & they said they don't even know if they can even get the part.

    Any ideas on fixing this problem?

    Had somewhat similar, but worse, problem this weekend (thankfully in my driveway) after buying a used Fleetwood 04 Cheyenne. First time I cranked it up! My main concern right now is getting it back down so I can get it to the dealer (23 miles away) for some hopefully covered warranty work. Any advice would be appreciated. I have taken a look around on this web site and looked at the Coleman Lift Repair Manual. Caution: gory details below...

    Started cranking it up, after it was up 2 ft., the piece the wrench goes into (might call it the "crank extension shaft") broke off. This is a 3" long hollow cylinder with the pin that the wrench slides over. I can see where the weldments broke (on the pic from grcooperjr, see the weld from the tube to the black; that is where it snapped). Inside was a 5/8" hex bolt, which I put a ratchet/socket on to finish cranking the top up so I could make it weathertight. But, as someone pointed out, this does not work to crank it down, because it unthreads (in talking to dealers this adjusts tension on something because there is a spring inside, still trying to figure this one out...)

    I opened the whiffletree box underneath, looks fine in there. I removed the cover over the lower crank assembly between the bumper and the camper body. I can see the chain/sprocket assembly that turns the threaded ahft and moves the whiffletree. There is a approx. 1" OD hardened steel collar on the threaded shaft, between the body and bumper, that I can access pretty easily. I was hoping to find just such a thing, but it is round - no flat sides for putting a wrench or socket on. My only thought was to put a vice grips or something on this collar and slowly work it counterclockwise, but I held off until Monday when I called 3 dealers.

    #1 said do what I was thinking - try to clamp on this collar somehow and crank the thing down.

    #2 and #3 said loosen/remove the bolt/bushing/washer/spring that is behind the bolt because when I cranked it up I tightened the spring, making it difficult to crank down. Then try to get inside the body of the camper and onto this shaft with a needle nose vice grips or the like and crank it down. If I can't do that, try what #1 said.

    Getting into the upper assembly with a needle nose and getting any torque on that shaft seems near impossible. Maybe I need to remove the rear panel of the camper and get in there. I can grab the collar on the lower assembly with various wrenches and turn it clockwise a bit, but it really doesn't want to go counterclockwise, wrench always slips. Tried vice grips, pipe wrench, etc. with not much luck.

    Maybe I'm missing something here, I can't believe there is not a more elegant backup method for lowering the top. Any advice would be great. Unfortunately, I doubt I will be the last person to have this problem. I understand there is a way to get it down by propping the 4 corners up from the outside, removing the cables somehow, and then having 4 people lower the top down, but that sounded like a last resort.

    I just used a vice grip on the bare part of the extension to loosen it. It lowered easily then.

    The only other choice that I see is to get the electric kit and replace it. I don't know what the want for the crank assy, but the electric kit with a complete new whiffletree is around $400. If the whiffletree is fine, you can more than likely save $100 or so. I can tell ya it sure does work nice not having to crank it...

    You need to get a drive hub extension package assembly. This happened to my pup two weeks ago and I was able to locate one for about $100 at a nearby RV dealer. Call around and good luck. Replacing it isn't too hard. LOL..

    Had the same issue. Called Beckleys RV in Maryland who evidently bought up the excess Coleman parts and got exactly what I needed. Works like a camp now. They were awesome to deal with and also sent me a parts list and diagram for my pup. Good luck

    Buggsee - how much did that n you? We spent the betr part of hte afternoon messing around with ours after it stopped 'clicking' when we were cranking the top up - the tube would spin freely. I'll be posting in a new thread for more input I hope! (And to see if we put it back together right lol).

    I just had the same problem. 08 fleetwood westlake. I opened up the inspection plate for the ratchet thingy and it was FULL of dirt!!! I got lucky and cleaned it well used pB Blaster to clean it up and then used some red marine grease.I didnt pack it in just some on my finger and pushed some of the lube in. Hmm that sounds a little kinky. Any way it is working well now.

    I had my crank shear pin broke because that pipe was messed up the tube section you need cost about $115.00 there two kinds one with ballbearings and one with a nylon collar. If it does no click when you crank it up and it stays up it the nylon one if it don't click and comes down it the other.
