I have been looking to purchase a camper and have run across a few good deals on some Colemans with ABS roofs. I have seen a few people who have built a top, (one was wood and one was metal). I have an idea I wanted to see what some of you might think. I was going to contact a local commercial awning company (the ones that make those vinyl backlit awnings on store fronts) and have an aluminum frame welded to match the size existing top using ¾ square tubing. I do not know how to weld and this may be a cost effective way to get a frame. I have three ideas for covering the frame: 1) Have them cover it with vinyl and then apply a layer of fiberglass to make it rigid over it. sand, paint and install 2) Cover with thin sheet metal and have rhino-lined 3) Cover with thin waterproof plywood (you see it in public bathrooms a lot and is available at home depot) and have it Rhino-Lined For the inside I was planning on putting on some Dow insulating foam (like used in homebuilding) and then cover the inside with paneling or more of the waterproof plywood. I am well aware that there are many more details that need to be worked out but I was wondering if any of you had any opinions on this. Thanks in advance for your help.
