Hi all, for our first camping trip in our new to us popup, we wanted to try Fort Mountain SP. We've heard so many good things about it. Has anyone camped there, how is the road in? We are being brave, for our first trip we are going to have to drive through Atlanta and go up into the mountains (well baby mountains anyway for those of you from out west).
    Thanks,
    Christina

I have heard good things about Fort Mountain from friends that camp there. I have visited it, but not camped there.

The roads getting there aren't bad. 52 is a good climb, but you can do it. Coming from Atlanta, I would get off at 411 and head to Chatsworth. 411 will be the light driving, not interstate but level (so to speak)and decent quality. You would turn right on to 52 and climb up to the state park.

    Hope you enjoy yourselves!

We have camped there twice in a tent, haven't been in the pu yet. The park offers a small beach with swimming, a lake for fishing, paddle boat rental, and lots of hiking trails. You have to go see the wall and the trail to the overlook. The bathrooms are very clean and modern. There is a sporting goods store in Chatsworth where you can get fishing gear and bait.

Thanks for the advice! We are excited, our first camping trip in the popup and our 6 month old son's first camping trip ever.

I just wanted to update this with a review of the park. We went at the end of May and really liked the campground a lot, we got there around noon and so almost all the spots were still available (it filled up on Saturday night). We had I think the most private spot in the campground. Awesome place to camp if you are in the area.

We almost stopped to check it out this weekend on our way up to the Ocoee. BrotherJohn, I'm sure we'll do a PUPS trip there sooner or later. If not, I may try to work it into next years family schedule.

Which site did you have? I am looking at going there towards the third week of March 2019.

It has been so long since we've been on this site. Just happened to log in today.
I believe that back in '07 we stayed at site #9 in loop #1. We have since returned once again in '15 and tent camped at site #42 in loop #2, which I think that might be a tent only site.
That trip in '15 was amazing. We went on a ranger led sunset hike and saw two baby bear cubs up in a tree. The next morning an adult bear walked right past our campsite in the woods.
