    Good Morning All,

I’m Jody from San Diego, CA. I have a 1986 Starcraft SLE 17 Fold-Down Camping Trailer. I bought it off a friend about 15 years ago. It served me well but it’s starting to rot in all the seams. I’ve looked at buying a new one but I just can’t justify the cost to use ratio so I’ve decided to rebuild the Starcraft. I’ll probably get to doing that sometime in 2019.

Good luck with your project. Read in the "In the Garage" and "At the Campsite" sections, and do a really good cost analysis, with plenty of fudging space in the figures. We renovated our '84 Palomino Shetland in '10 (6' box, one bunk end). We replaced canvas, did lots of repair on walls, floor (though didn't have to replace it as we first thought), external lift system, cabinets, stove, etc. By the time we were finished, we had spent almost as much as we did for a new-old-stock Coleman Cobalt (8' box, 2 bunk ends) at the end of the season in '11; probably $100-700 less than the Cobalt. Expenses were not only the new lifts and canvas, but all the paint, adhesives, good quality fasteners, new LP tank and tires, etc.
Was it worth it? In most ways, yes - we got two full seasons out of it, and I do mean full, I took it on a 3 week trip the first year. It taught us a lot about the construction of a popup. You already know that you like how your pup works, but really using it as we did those two years taught us what we'd look for when we up-sized. (We up-sized sooner than we expected, since we used it more than planned, and the cramped space got old rather quickly.)
