Has anyone made solar bunkend covers. I have seen the ones from popup gizmos and like the idea. I just can't justify $89 for the windproof ones. They look so simple, just need to find the material. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I've seen a few members make them out of those super-thin mylar emergency blankets. But the PopUpGizmos are that way to go in my opinion.

We use survival blankets that are the same material used in Cabella's emergency blankets. They are not the really thin mylar but are a somewhat quilted two-ply with grommets. One side is silver and the other, on ours, is olive drab. We found them on eBay from a seller offering military surplus and paid about $5 each. One blanket covers the full size bunk end and two cover the queen.

The material in the military surplus is almost identical to Popup Gizmos.

popup gizmo's is a website that sells popup stuff like the solar bunkend covers.

solar bunkend covers help by reflecting hte heat away from the bunkends and shadeing the bunkeneds from the hot sun to help keep the inside of the pup cool

Jhower, we were going to buy some of the bunk end covers but if we can make some that would be a lot cheaper. How do you attach the blanket so it doesn't get blown away?

    I bought these:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=270128382477&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=017

I duct taped 2 together for each of the ends. I use spring clamps to hold them on.

I bought my sportsman emergency blankets from BassPro in Harrisburg as I needed mine PDQ and couldn't wait for shipment. I stitched them with the sewing machine - tho' I like duct tape, didn't even think of that - and spring clamp them on, too.

Glad I had them as it rained 3 days out of five at the Creation East music festival. Kept us dry --and clean (it's a mite dusty in the fields)!!!

Our solar covers are like the ones in the link that Xolthrax posted. We use small spring clamps to hold them on.

I found the perfect blankets @ REI http://www.rei.com/product/407106 They are 5' X 7', and only $11. $35 for 3 sure beats $89. With 2 little ones running around the camper, every little bit of savings helps.

Thanks again for the great replies

For anyone else that wants to try making their own, I found the blankets on three different sites. Cabelas sells red and olive drab, REI sells red ones, and Campmor sells blue ones. REI and Campmor sell them for $1 less than Cabelas. Just do a search for all weather blanket. They are made by MPI outdoors ( http://www.mpioutdoors.com/product.htm ) if you are interested in reading about them.

I guess nobody looked closely at my listing. The blankets are 5X7 (OK, they're 4'8" X 7') like the ones that James found, but I paid $58 for 12 of them (with shipping). That's less than half what REI or Cabellas is selling them for.

I used 4 for the bunk ends (king & queen). I used 2 more for underneath the mattresses.

I gave the rest to my brother for his PU.
