Lubricating Lift System

    I have read some of the posts that suggest using a silicone based lubricant to lube the lift system. My only concern is how and where and what do I lube and also how do I access these areas. I have a 1995 Coleman Destiny Royale and the *.* tree seems to be enclosed. Any suggestions, within reason [:D], will be appreciated.

    I used a silicone base spray on the lift poles. I out card board between the lift poles and the canvas to protect it. Then I sprayed the lift poles and each insertion point. I let it dray for about an hour and then popped it down. Important to not get the spray on hte canvas. We have a vinal outside canvas. THe spray I used said it was safe for it but I protected it anyway.

    With the roof down and the cables slack, I removed the cover of the whiffle tree and wiped the parts clean with paper towels. I greased 'em up good. Replaced cover. Raised the roof and used the spray like eve104. I also sprayed all the pulleys in the lift posts and under the Pup.

    In the manual you'll find a description of the things to lube and what to use on them. Silicone Lubricant spray can be found in the automotive section at Wally World for just a few dollars a can.

    Also in the manual you'll find some additional instructions regarding the removal of the whiffletree cover. The cover is a structural panel in some models, and some additional bracing between the frame crossmembers is needed before you remove it. That's all in the manual. From there it's just as Twisty said: clean it up and grease it. I used a high-temp axle grease.

    I believe a 95 year model is a model that will require you to brace before removing the cover. However, I believe if the roof is down and the cables are slack, you can remove without bracing as long as you do not attempt to raise the roof with the cover removed.

    Also, you are talking about two different areas of maintenance, lubricating the lift post and cables, and lubricating the whiffletree. You will want to use some grease on the whiffletree. I would use some to the “Red and Tacky” grease as it tends to stay where you put it. I don’t think you want to use any type of spray lubricant on the whiffletree.

    Thanks to all for your responce. The videos from rabird were exceptionally helpful. I am going camping later this week and will see if I can fit underneath my pup to try everythingout. [:D]

    Stupid question but obviously when you grease up the lift system you would want the camper in the down position, this is where common sense has gotten me but my common sense is not always right.

    Thanks and I did know that the roof should be in the down position. This brings up :) another question. In my owners manual, it states that the roof should be raised before the pup is leveled and the jacks down. There seems to be thru the portal that most of you level the pup before raising the roof therefore I seem to be in a quandary? Any thoughts on the subject?

    i have no clue how you would level your camper after the roof is up, especially side to side.

    I beleive it is common practice to level(side to side and front to back), raise the roof, then stabalize. If your owners manuel says something other then go with that. You should never use the stabalizers to level the popup.

    The roof/stabilizers order depends on the MFG. Colemans say roof up then stabilizers but on my Rockwood it says stabs down first then crank the roof. Always go by what the manual says. As for leveling, I can't see how you could level side to side once the roof is up. how could you get a block underneath the wheel? Maybe they mean front to back? All the trailers I've known always call for leveling first.

    I really don't know about the 1995 manuals, but my old 1975 Coleman manual said to level the pup with the stabilizer jacks, after the top was lifted. In later manuals, they warn NOT to level the pup with the stabilizer jacks, but to put the top up before deploying the stabilizer jacks. I know - it's a quandary. Who do you believe?

    Simply put, level the pup from side to side with a BAL type leveler or blocks under the wheels. This means pulling it onto those blocks and checking for level. Disconnect the TV, then level from front to rear with the tongue jack. Then lift the roof, then deploy the stabilizers.
     
  12. How in the hoo ha are you supposed to level after your roof is up? They must have written your manual late on a Friday. As Mercman said, the rest varies by camper. I also have a Rockwood, and it says to raise the roof before I put my stabs down. Go figure.

    Up Down Up Down. Roof up -stabs down stabs up - roof down. The stabs have nothing to do with leveling.Level with the tires for side to side and the tongue jack for front to back.

    I use DRY white lithium spray on my telescoping lift arms. I goes on wet but dries quick. Does not leave an oily layer to collect dust and dirt.

    Thanks to all for your advice and thanks to rabird for the videos. I now have accomplished this task and the waffle tree is now freshly cleaned and lubricated as well as all pulleys and poles siliconed. I did reread [:(] the manual and it seems I am to level the pup before I crank it up but wait until it is up to put the stabilizer jacks down. Again thanks to all for your advice.
