Just purchased my first ever pup...a 1990 Starcraft Meteor. Got it for a steal, and it's in great shape (will need a new canvas, eventually...patches will work fine for now). Spent all week cleaning it up and getting to know the ins & outs (much thanks to all those on this portal for the tips!) So I just thought I'd post a few pics of my new baby. Can't wait to get it out there!!!

That's a nice rig you got there, Kingsfan! That's a 1990? It looks nearly brand new. I don't know why you think the canvas needs to be replaced - it looks like it needs a good cleaning, but other than that...

I'd investigate where that staining came from - maybe a top seal is leaking or something. Other than that, I'd camp it in a second!

Thanks, Dusty82! I'm thrilled with the deal I got on it...it just needed a good cleaning and a few minor "fixes". The canvas is completely ripped above the sink area (didn't show that in the pics). And it's worn so thin that you could stick your finger through many spots. I don't believe the previous owner kept it covered when storing...but I'm not sure. But like I said, I'm ok with patching it for now. Everything else (floors, roof, frame, etc) seem to be in great shape. I'm sure I'll uncover some hidden issues as I play around with it and use it more, but so far it looks to be in great shape. There is a little bit of water staining on the roof (which leads me to believe that the roof seals are leaking somewhere), but in looking at the caulking around the seems, it looks as if it's not been replaced or re-sealed in a long time. I'm hoping if I can just remove some of the old seal and re-seal it (I have read that 3M 5200 is a good choice), that it will fix any possible points of entry for water. Because it's almost 20 years old, I fully expect that I'll find things here and there, but overall, I'm very pleased with its condition, given that it was practically given to me.

    Thanks again!

Nice PUP I would try cleaning the canvas first & see if the staining is due to something else causing it. Happy camping

    Good Luck with it.

Thanks for the responses and compliments. About the canvas...I tried gently cleaning it, but I can't really get it clean. And it's pretty brittle at this point (the previous owner told me that he used to spray it with a bleach/water combo, which I think has weakened the fabric of the canvas...as evidenced by the tip of the soft sponge that I was using to clean it going right through the canvas in one spot!!!). It's in good enough shape that I can patch the numerous holes and use it as is for some great camping trips, but down the road, I believe I'm just going to have to replace the whole thing. And from what I've read on here, it appears I can get one for about $700 at Bear Creek, which sounds like a fair deal for an entire canvas replacement (and by the way...prepare yourselves!!! I'll be asking MANY, MANY questions about how to install that when the time comes!!!) Thanks again for your responses and for all of the great advice!!! -Bill

    akingsfan,

You might try contacting Starcraft to see if they have the exact canvas. Low and behold, they have 10 . . . make that 9 now of the canvases for my '71 Stardust 6. They gave me the item number to give to a local Starcraft dealer and I'll have it drop-shipped in a few days. It ran me just over $900 including tax and shipping which is several hundred less than anyone else was charging.

nice looking nu2u pup....you got the right idea...get out and enjoy and fix er up as you go....you might think about investing a few bucks in a couple of tarps and bungees and stash them under a cabinet until you get the new canvas....might save a weekend when unexpected rain shows up....when we bought ours it came with a huge blue tarp...something like 32 by 20...and it was all folded up nice like it was new...previous owner said they never used but was prepared for any rainy weeks....their plans was to cover the pup and tie the ends off to trees and have a big makeshift canopy....its still all folded up neatly stashed away under the cabinet....who knows.....enjoy and keep sharing your excitment and adventures

Nice rig! Does it have a single bed on one end and a double on the other?

Seeker of light: Thanks for the tip! I will definitely try contacting Starcraft directly to see if they might have a Meteor canvas laying around. This canvas is going to be very tricky to patch/repair, because the previous owner used bleach to clean it after each of his trips (thereby completely dissolving/weakening the fabric). So a new canvas is definitely in the near future. I was all set to order one from Bear Creek, but I'll definitely give Starcraft a call to see if they might have one! Thanks again!

Left Coast PUP: Thanks! And I'm located in Sacramento...also POURING rain here! Good thing my pup fits in the garage!!! Still not sure where my first trip will be. We have friends who want to go coastal camping (NorCal) in March...but until I get the canvas repaired/replaced and the roof re-sealed, I'm a little nervous to take it out until summer...when there is ZERO chance of rain. So probably somewhere in the Lake Tahoe will be our first outing! CAN'T WAIT!

Outdoorsnga: EXCELLENT idea! I will definitely purchase a few tarps and a few bungee cords & rope...just in case! Although summer weather out here is VERY predictable (dry & ZERO percent chance of rain), any Spring camping could be "iffy". So thanks for the tip...I'll add it to my growing list of "must haves" for my pup!

wcasey5: Thanks! It's definitely a "starter pup", but I fell in love with it when I saw it. It's in really good shape, and the price was right...so I couldn't pass it up. And it has doubles on both ends. (Small doubles, but doubles nonetheless!)

What a cutie! We loved our Starcraft, they were very well made. I had good experiences with calling Starcraft directly. Bear Creek is great too.
We look forward to watching and helping your progress anyway we can.

    And Welcome!
