We would like to camp at Jekyll Island but have just recently been told that the sand gnats and biting flies are horrible , the water stinks and signs are posted everywhere, telling folks not to get in nor fish in the water (ocean) that it is polluted Has anyone camped there recently, and exactly what are the conditions there?

bugs can or cannot be a problem, use spray and you will be fine, as far as water stinking and nasty, lol, the ocean is fine, the river is close and when the tide goes out if you walk across the road the mud of the river can pong a little bit. Jekyll Island is beautifull, campground is pretty with the trees, but the grounds are nothing but DIRT, you can expect to walk back from the rest rooms and be assured your feet will be black. Try Blythe Island just a few miles away, a lot cleaner.
