I bought some spider brushes on Amazon, after my hot water heater wouldn't stay lit. Spiders love the smell of gas and find their way into the propane pipe. This flexible brush cleans them out

Good idea to keep them clean but spiders can only "smell" something if they touch it. They just are attracted to the tubes.

Many species of Spiders have very sensitive nails at the end of the limbs. This is going to help them be able to pick up various types of movement around them. They also use this to help them with tasting and smelling.

Same reason that different birds are attracted to different size holes. Shelter and nesting.

One really shouldn't be smelling propane at one's water heater when it's being stored anyway.

(Once I failed to deweb my water heater and it was very embarrassing when a neighboring camper informed us that it was on fire.)
