Okay so this is a dumb new guy question. Especially for the other California guys. Do you have to pay use tax or sales tax in a private party to private party sale? I have a line on a nice used Jayco and I want to know how much of a tax hit I will take if any.! <img src=../Images/icons/icon_smile_confused.gif border=0 align=middle>

In PA you go to a notary to transfer the title and pay the tax based on what you tell the notary you just paid for the camper. I don't know about campers but with cars, if you try to really low-ball the price, they will use the bluebook value. So don't say you paid $1.

I'm sure California would never miss an opportunity to tax me. I'll just assume the same as PA. Thanks!

You will have to pay sales tax on what you paid for it. I moved from CA a few years ago and what I used to do with old VW's I bought was I would have the seller write me a bill of sale with a lower dollar amount than what I actually paid for it. Most sellers know the game that the state play's and are more than willing to work with you.

When I lived in Ca You had to pay sales tax on any used vehicle you bought including trailers. It will be the tax rate in the area where you purchase it. As others have said see if the seller will bill of sale a lower amount but be careful not to go too low unless you can prove a reason like damage or something.

I know in Texas, that when we bought our pup private seller to private buyer, we did not pay tax to the seller. Just at the court house where we transferred the title. We then paid tax. We only paid $2400 for our pup so we paid the tax on the amount. But, the seller did not charge sales tax.

Yes you will need to pay tax, and based upon the value of the trailor you will also need to pay registration fees. The good point about the reg fees is they are good for 5 years, and the renewal is cheap.

In Mass, if bought from a private seller the registry of motor vehicles asks a few questions pertaining to the PU and looks up the PU in NADA and bases the sales tax on that.

    Jen,

You shouldn't have had to pay twice, unless one wasn't a sales tax.

When we sold our Coleman the buyers were exempt from PA sales tax since they were taking it out of state. They had to pay tax when it was registered in their home state. The same thing should have applied for you.

Here in New York State the sales tax is paid when you register it. The seller signs a form with the sales price on it and has to sign it and then the new owner pays the sales tax. The seller has to sign the perjury statement of they (DVM) say go back and get the signature. (learned that the hard way).

Not applicable to you US folks, but here in Ontario, if you buy from a dealer, you pay the Provincial Sales Tax (PST=8% in Ont.)plus the Federal Goods and Services Tax (GST=7%). These are all paid to the dealer plus $25 to register and plate the trailer. When buying from a dealer the trailer is registered and plated before you leave the lot.
If you buy privately you only have to pay the PST plus $25 to register and plate the trailer.
The only good thing about the whole process is that in Ont. the $25 plates and resisters the trailer for life.
