How does an installed USB port have a parasitic load? Where is the power disappearing to? I am curious.

Almost all electronic devices now days remain in a ready state when not actually in use, which requires current draw. You won't notice this at home or while plugged into shore power because you have a constantly renewing power source. Granted a single usb port will probably not make that big a difference while camping unless you're already running on the edge anyway, but the cumulation of things can surprise you if you're not careful. This becomes more important if the camper is stored for a couple of weeks without a charge source, these little draws add up because they are 24x7 even though they might be small.

Some of the sources of parasitic draws are the LP leak detector, some newer fridges, stereos, inverters and usb ports.

Why don't you install one of those outlets that have USB built in? USB cannot be more than 5V. At 12 volts you fry everything that you connect to it

The one he is installing 12 volt powered. It has a switch, volt meter, 12 volt outlet, and two 5 volt 2.1 amp USB charging ports.

Here is a nice setup for $20. Switch, 2 usb charge ports with volt meter between the ports, and cigarette lighter port

    check it out.
