We'll be heading there in the coming weeks, wondering if this is a good camp ground for us to take bikes? Two kids 6 & 8, Mom and Dad... Looking just to peddle around the camp ground, not go mountain biking on any rough trails. Anyone?

Bring the bikes....

Big Meadows is beautiful, one of our favorite campgrounds. Not only can you ride around the campground but you can ride to the general store at the beginning of the driveway and up to the lodge. Do not miss the sunsets from the lodge which itself is fantastic.

Enjoy!

I agree with the last two posts. You can bring the bikes for that CG. You'll be glad you did. :)

I hope you have another reservation in October so you can enjoy the fall colors. We are going the 3rd weekend. When the schools have off for the Maryland teachers convention.

Hey arthuruscg, we're planning on staying at Loft Mountain that weekend too! Maybe we'll pass each other on a trail or on the Skyline Drive somewhere.

Big Meadow is the most commercial CG in the park. It's also the only place to get gasoline now. (also the only showers) The bikes are fine depending on who is riding them and where. I don't recommend kids bikes except in the CG since they will be limited to the flat sections of the CG. Be prepared to climb if you venture out on bikes. You are in the mountains :) Around the CG you should be OK even with kid's bikes.

tombiasi, Loft Mountain lost their gas station at the Wayside but as of this past June, the campground still had hot showers and laundry facility at the camp store.

Thanks. I wasn't sure. I was told they may go. Hope not.

The Appalachian Trail goes right by the CG as well. It is a good flat section to hike on. We hiked a section of the AT last year and stopping by the CG and hitting the General Store was a nice stop for us!! We hiked from Hawksbill to Swift Run.

I envy you silvermickey. I hiked the AT in the 70's. can't do it now. Back then no bridges or pussycat stuff.
You just hiked and camped. Spent a few day helping with the big fire back then.

Have a great time authuruscg! We went back for our second visit at Big Meadows last month :) We had a fantastic time. Saw a bear cub along Skyline Drive :)
