Why is there a campground next to a sewage treatment plant? Seems a little strange. Doesn't it smell? The sewage treatment plant near me had to buy up several houses across the street from the plant because the smell was so bad. Also it seems like there is a lot of open land in the area, why put a campground there?

Why is there a campground next to a sewage treatment plant?

Wilkesboro, NC is the host city for MerleFest, one of the largest Blue Grass musical festivals in the country. MerleFest, considered one of the premier music festivals brings in thousands of people each year. The festival hosts numerous artists, performing on 13 stages during the course of the four-day event. The community has established camping facilities all over the city and county. There must be at least 1,000 campsites just at this water treatment plant. It really is a pretty park.

Wilkesboro, NC is a small town. Over 78,000 people were at this years event. They come from all over the world.

We are lucky to be able to use this facility for our little rally.

Mtnman'---- are there actual numbered campsites? Or are there just a fee to camp and camp in a group like you want? Just can't tell on this little phone. Looks cool. Will see if I can get DW interested next year. We plan on seeing Washington and Maryland next year. [:D]

The sites are numbered. But for the rally we have the whole place to ourselves. Also earlier in the thread RotnMom posted a link to a video from a drone. That video was during Merlefest I believe.

Ok....full disclosure, as they say.

When Merlefest began, over 25 years ago, it was a few artists standing on a flatbed truck on the local college campus to memorialize the death of Doc Watson's son, Merle...thus, Merlefest. It is actually considered an 'Americana' festival because there is music from all genres past and present. As the festival grew, quickly, the city was scrambling to find space for campers who were arriving in HERDS! LOL The Wastewater Treatment Plant has a LOT of unused acreage. Most of the plant workers are also firemen, first responders, EMTs, or volunteers for the Wilkesboro Fire Department. The firemen staff and run the entire camping operation during Merlefest, and they cook some AWESOME breakfast and dinners for cheap. Minus incidentals (electric bill, etc) the money made goes to the Fireman's Family Fund. Merlefest alone generates around $15-17 MILLION a year. The college is the largest recipient of the funds and I have no clue how it's spread out after that. Groups of all types set up a HUGEMONGOUS food tent and everyone gets their fill of tasty treats!

Ok, so at some point, the city allowed power poles to be installed in various places on the lower acreage. This, of course, allows all varieties of campers to come to "Sewerfest". Every September, there is also a local smaller festival that is held called Carolina in the Fall, hosted by the Kruger Brothers. Folks camp at the sewer for that one too, and the festival is held on Main Street. Large groups of Scouts use the facility for camping as well. They used to allow individual camping, but that has been discontinued.

So, yes, my rally is, indeed, at a Wastewater Treatment Plant. The actual plant takes up this tiny area. Up until now, I've chosen for our group to camp near the front of the property, where there are trees and some shade. This year, we did NOT need shade as it was chilly! LOL There are only 20 power poles there, but a building across the road (internal roads, not the main road) has 2 power boxes on the front and 2 on the backside. We utilize the front 2 almost every year. Mostly for the large units, like a 30' RV, a 28' Hi-Lo. This year, we had more folks than power poles, BUT, it worked beautifully because 2 people volunteered to use the building power (again, we're talking so close to the group we can hear each other talking) and Steve only needed 110, so he could pretty much park wherever he wanted and run an extension cord to a power pole. Most of the poles have 30 amp AND 110 plug ins. I picked a nice little tree for him to be beside so kitty wouldn't be hot. :) 2 No Shows left some empty space for the cooks to use as well. There is no doubt that next year, we will move over to the open area 'sites'. During festival time, they use that orange spray paint to indicate site boundries for EVERY site, whether tent or power. Everyone has MORE than adequate space. When/if we need to move over there, we will have SO much more space, yet we'll still be a small community, as opposed to being spread all over, like in a normal campground, and never getting to meet some rally folks except at the pot lucks.

Up the hill, is the 'quiet area' (midnight). There are hundreds of tent sites up there. They also added an 18 hole Frisbee Disc Course. It doesn't impede the campers and since locals aren't allowed in during festival time, it's probably not used much.

The point is, it IS NOT a normal campground scenario. BUT, the pluses are FREE firewood. They use a Bobcat to load a trailer of wood. As we use it, more wood miraculously appears! The plant guys tend to our needs as they arise. Another city event took all the hard side garbage cans this year, so they brought us our very own dumpster! They keep the bath house clean and full of toilet paper. That is, within reason, I should say. For instance, it was very dewy every night and morning. ALL the bathrooms had wet leaves drug in, as well as most of the rigs!! I know I swept mine 5-6 times a day rather than take my shoes off because like I said, it was CHILLY!! :) I did not expect nor ask, that the guys come sweep every day. They have enough to do as it is. I didn't sweep the bath house either. You simply can't stay ahead of anything wet on your shoes!

Anyway, it has affectionately been called "Sewerfest" since they started allowing camping for Merlefest. When I started this rally, I think I had at least double the actual attendees PM me and ask, was it REALLY a sewer? LOL The actual plant is very small. It doesn't smell. What WILL smell, and it wasn't where we were camping, is when the Tyson Chicken plant trucks in their 'waste' products. I don't even want to know what all they bring in, but I know 'oils' are trucked in. But those 'drying tanks' are up a hill and not within sight of the camping. There was one day though, that as soon as you turned left out of the plant, that smell hit you from the drying ponds. A few folks were convinced after that, where it was coming from and that is wasn't over where we were. :)

Basically, we have a great group of folks who return every year. I've already been asked to start the 2016 thread!! I'm very proud of the growth and how happy (especially the women) the new folks are that it's NOT some scummy place with power poles!!

As folks have said, the photos speak volumes and if you live within a decent distance, you should call them and ask if you can come ride around and check it out. I'm STILL trying to get one of the DOGs to have a dual rally with us. OMG! I can't imagine the food we'd have, and it's pretty darned good now!!

Anyway, there you have it. We are Sewer Rats and we love it!!

Ok you guys! The album is up and ready for y'all to upload all those great photos!! Only one person has posted in the album, so don't leave him hanging! LOL

Besides, I KNOW you guys got pics of our HOT Hoola Girls, Chocolate & Vanilla!! LOL

Thanks for another great rally y'all...you surely know it's you guys who make it the success it's been for four years now!! I know everyone cooks a LOT of food, but I have to give kudos for ghri49 carrying his smoker down again!! It takes another trailer to get it there!! There were a couple excellent pork butts that came out of that thing, not to mention the ribs for the cooks!! And mtnman1989 brought some good Hickory wood for the smoker. YUMMMMMMMMM!!

While I mention food, I would like to acknowledge a few special people this year who cooked non-stop for the entire time they were there. It was like a 24 hour buffet! So to ghri49, ironeagle81, yetavon & wild-life....THANK YOU GUYS!!! To yetavon & ironeagle81, THANK YOU for being the most excellent hoola girls a rally could have!! We might have to rent y'all out for other events!! [:O] [LOL] [LOL]

On the financial side, we MORE than doubled last year's contribution to the Fireman's Family Fund from camping fees!!!! After the raffle was completed, folks were given the opportunity to donate again, by way of stuffing the hoola girls' clam shells!! That was also more than double last years doations!! YAY TO EVERYONE!!! [A] [A] [A]

We had some awesome music around the fire Saturday night too! When the players ran out of songs they all knew, they reverted to old covers and it was a musical comedy of epic proportions! I haven't laughed so hard in years!! Let's see...that was SC_BradyBunch on the mandolin & guitar, thethird152 on guitar, yetavon on banjo, and all the singers!! WOOT!!!

We missed Shelmily due to illness, southeastcamper due to family issues, and mnebinger, who had to leave early with TWO sick sons!! Hope you're ALL over it and back to normal life now!

Can't wait for #5!!! Dang, how do I outdo hoola girls...hhhmmm!!!

Howdy gov! I hope you guys DO make it next year!! I'm going on a diet now to prepare for the mass quantities of food that will be there!! LOL

I even have a t-shirt design I'm going to run by printer friend and see if we can get it priced fairly cheap!! Well, one for the Sewer Rats and one for 'just in case' we can get a dual rally going!!

Take care!
