this is easy. I could do this all day. [:D] I did a campground search on google map and there are literally thousands of them.

Was trying to be more certain about having a location that was reservable, but Boondocking may be the best way to go, and just give the coordinates.

2017 West Coast Total Eclipse Rally

Since it has been almost 3 yrs. since this rally was suggested, how naming it:

2017 West Coast Total Eclipse Rally

and take RC_Maniacs (and others) suggestion of locating a Boon docking location and then concentrate on locating facilities and services we might need such as Water & Dump stations, gas and groceries??

    Suggestions;

+Near calm water or lake would be ideal to observe Shadow Bands during the eclipse
+Middle of summer we probably want should look at evacuation routes, being many of the roads will probably have traffic in this region AND the forest may still be dry (even after a el nino winter) AND the chance are increased of careless campers because of the eclipse.
+ UT suggested East of the Cascades, to reduce overcast conditions
+ a separate thread for Shirt design ideas for UT (or his designee) to work with

Re: 2017 West Coast Total Eclipse Rally

Umatilla NF allows camping within 300 feet of an open forest road. that's a pretty wide girth. so I say pick a spot and call the ranger station.

Following the guidelines above, I'd say camping not far off of Hwy 26 on NF-091 in Umatilla checks all the boxes. It'd be a very short drive up to Bates State park to use the pond for observation. It's not far off the main road. There are also restrooms and water at the park. There's also a cafe & general store just up the road. http://www.austinhousecafecountrystore.com/default.aspx

    https://www.google.com/maps/place/44%C2%B033'55.2%22N+118%C2%B029'56.9%22W/@44.5653409,-118.5007927,611m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x0?hl=en

and that puts you very near the center line of the eclipse's path. [2C]

Has anyone been to Bates pond? What about boondocking around there it looks like a lot of that is fenced off private land.

What works for this area is it is BLM (unless we have protestors) Brett has identified a local grocery for supplies, Ranger station, a pond or state park, in the line of totality.
If there is min. Cell coverage, we can leave messages at those places and possible secure enough area for those who may be showing up later.

Your right about fr-91, I was looking along 7 & 20 closer to the park for those that don't have potties or have small water tanks.

2017 West Coast Total Solar Eclipse Rally

Let's investigate both options and we may need TWO areas!

It should be an interesting potluck if we have a "Solar Eclipse" theme! [:D]

Eating According to Your Zodiac Sign
    Moonbeam Meat Pie
    Aquarius Salad
    Uranium Lemon Crunch Bars
    Planetary Ham w Champagne Sauce
    Astrologer's Chocolate Cheese Pie
    Twelfth (Pisces) House Sole
    Starlit Pineapple Dip
    Cancer Cranberry Salad
    Clam Chowder Neptune
    Lobster Bisque Neptune
...since the Moon will be eating away the Solar disc. [CK]

Based on the solar eclipse map, you should consider pelton park and/or Simtustus RV park.

Are you familiar with this area AND are you local enough to visit in the future??

One of the considerations was to be East of the Cascades, for possibly clearer skies.
How does the roughly 200 miles difference effect that consideration?

At least it will be passing through KS:

    KANSAS
The path travels through the very far NE corner of the Sunflower State, and the centerline passes right over Troy at 1:05:55pm. Folks there will enjoy 2m38s of totality!Atchison (2m16s at 1:06pm), Hiawatha (2m31s at 1:05pm) and Seneca (2m14s at 1:04pm) are other cities from which to enjoy this magnificent show!Yes, Leavenworth is in the path as well, but you'll only see 1m35s there, so we'd head north to St. Joseph MO! (That is, if you can. We realize that certain residents of Leavenworth may be somewhat limited in their travel opportunities...)Topeka is NOT in totality! THAT'S RIGHT - IF YOU STAY IN TOPEKA, the eclipse will never be total for you! You will need to use your eclipse glasses for the entire eclipse! Head north and east to get into the path!

I camp at Simtustus around twice a year. I stay at both places but usually prefer the Rv park because the arm of the reservoir that it is on is good for kayaking around and fishing.

It's on the east side of the cascades, and except when there are fires, it's pretty clear.
