There were 2 emails. 1 saying after July 14th, the North loop is closed for the rest of 2020. Then another email saying the whole campground would be closed from 8/1-10/31. Steph has her doubts that it will actually close for construction as they've threatened in the past. We've re-booked in the south loop and are waiting to see what happens. We need to get a hold of VTRailroadGuy (Josh )
Hi All, Hope everyone is well! I have now had every reservation I made cancelled this season at Winhall. Very frustrating to say the least, now this construction thing. Why they couldn't do the project during the extended closure baffles me. I would like to mention that the only things that have ever stopped this rally are a flood and a pandemic, just saying... S LOOP is almost booked up for the season now. No Winhall for us this year, see you hopefully next year!
Hey guys, I have always wanted to do the VT rally but never was able. We finally got our rig rescued from Ohio last week and relocated with us to Virginia, which happens to be open for business. If you guys get really desperate and want to travel south let me know and I will meet up with ya!
I agree with Chris. It seems like every year they plan some sort of renovation/upgrade during peak season. WHY???? Anyway, unless we move to another campground, I don't think I will be joining you as the new camper/truck combo is more than I care to take across that bridge. It is killing me, as this is by far our most favorite trip of the year.
Central Virginia, Waynesboro address, Shenandoah Valley. It's a beautiful area. Just got the beast down here last week so finally getting excited about camping again. Hoping I can find some places to still get into this year. From pictures I have seen the state parks here are beautiful, but haven't had a chance to actually get out to any yet.
I have been to a few VA state parks. First Landing, Belle Isle, and Sky Meadows. Also Bull Run regional park. All were nice campgrounds. You need to make your way a little farther North into PA. I will be at Codorus State Park the weekend after Labor day. We have our annual East Coast Dutch Oven Gathering. It's a great event, and a beautiful park if you are interested.
Entertainingly a couple hours ago she tossed out the idea of going back to French Creek again if we could get in there. The drive up to PA definitely isn't a bad haul. Unfortunately the weekend after labor day we will be in Indiana for my cousins wedding, but that does sound like a good weekend that you have planned.
That is too bad Jay, maybe some other time. Hope you have fun at your cousins wedding. Oddly enough, I have never been to French Creek, and it's only a little over an hour away form my house.
OK, so I am trying to find info on the bridge, and what they recommend for length. I can't seem to find any info. Anyone have any ideas?
Never mind, I found it. Vehicles must be 42 ft. or less in length to cross. My camper alone is 36 ft.
Be careful with those bridges. This is a one lane bridge we crossed a couple weeks ago and at the end had to make a left turn to get to the CG. Directly across from the bridge is a large rock wall. At the end of the bridge is a "no left turn" sign. Unfortunately once you get there you have no other choice unless you want to go several miles out of your way to turn around. I successfully made the left turn with a 36 foot rig and a long wheelbase truck, but everyone at the campground was shocked. It's not uncommon for rigs to show up with serious rear end damage from the tail swing on the turn, and upon later examination the bridge has many battle scars to confirm that.
So, I moved our site to S60. I really hope I can get over that bridge, and get parked in the spot, it was one of the bigger ones, but down in that little loop by the river. I have updated the spreadsheet to reflect the changes. Now, what about potluck location?
