As this year is well on its way and summer camping reservation being made, I am throwing out this invitation to "save the date" for this years 4th of July rally for those of you interested in joining us in the southern Sequoia's [CP]

Base camp will be the same as last year, in Camp 2, which is about 45 minutes north of Kernville, CA and 3 miles north of Johnsondale, CA on Forest Route 22S82. It's a dispersed campground, so no facilities & no water (aside from the creek). In Johnsondale, there is a small convenience store with ice and goodies and they allowed us to fill up water jugs but there is no dump station there. About 9 miles up the road is the nearest developed campground with pit toilets and water but again, no dump station. These are the GPS coordinates for Camp 2: 36.0000, -118.548250.

The proposed dates are looking to be between Thursday Jun 29 through Tuesday July 4.

Things to do: There are lots of hiking and mountain biking trails around, couple rock slides, couple waterfalls, and a few creeks with trout. The famous "Trail of 100 Giants" is about a 10 mile drive (http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/sequoia/recarea/?recid=79825). Needles Lookout Tower Trail is another 15 miles from there (http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/sequoia/news-events/?cid=STELPRD3791360). With all this rain, I'm sure the creeks and waterfalls will be flowing nicely. Here are some links from last year: Dome Rock, Natural Rock Slide, Needles Lookout, Peppermint Creek Falls, President George H.W. Bush Tree, Trail of 100 Giants. Other information on the area can be found at https://www.fs.usda.gov/main/sequoia/home.

Here's last years thread to the 2016 SoCal Sequoia National Park Rally.

    Awesome shuang2.

I want to get the word out while it's early enough for people that may be interested to plan accordingly since no reservations 6 months in advanced are needed for this area.

We'll be in Sequoia (Dorst Campground) for 5 days 2nd week of August, but maybe I could swing this too. I can never get enough of Sequoia. Frankly though, I'm too new to know how to do this. What happens at a rally? How many people usually attend? Is there a leader that reserves a group site or two?

Usually there's a wild party called Potluck... Each rally has its own plan for an event or two. The last rally i went to had a potluck and a nature hike in crevices and up to top of mountains.

Well Poppet, what happens at a rally stays at a rally :lipsrsealed:[:D][LOL]

I headed up this rally last year and will be doing it again this year. Last year, we had about 8 or 9 groups come together. I just started going to rallies myself last year but I would say that from what I've seen, there is between 5 and 10 campers. As to what happens at a rally, its basically a call out to other campers to just get together and meet fellow campers. Usually, one night there is a pot-luck to get everyone together. The area that we go is free dispersed camping, so there is no services and do not need reservations. This year is looking to be a smaller group. So far it is 3 of us.

Here's the link to last years Sequoia Rally.

Hey Hal, I'm not aware of any other official rallies for later this year but the Halloween Rally is in the pre-planning stage.
