Look like we have 5 [:D]

    Update to the location:
Last year we selected Camp 2 for this rally since our other camping spot at Lloyd Meadows was on full fire restrictions and the area was eventually closed due to falling trees from the drought. Last year, camp fires were only allowed at designated campgrounds like Camp 2. This year so far, it's looking good so we'd like to head back to that area with Camp 2 being a back-up. The area is located on the same Forest Route 22S82 about 17 miles north of Camp 2 and 19 miles north of Johnsondale. GPS coordinates are (36.146748,-118.490434) which is also the trail head of Freeman Creek Trail. From there, there is a pit toilet and water about 2 miles north where the road ends. Lloyd Meadows is within hiking distance to huge Sequoias, close to the Fork of the Kern trail head (if fly fishing is your thing), and there's also this tree. Also, since Lloyd Meadows is further up, it is more secluded and usually only our group camping there so no loud late night music and yelling (like last year). With all that being said, here's my thoughts...

Plan A: Lloyd Meadows if the current "no fire restrictions" hold.
Plan B: Camp 2 if there are fire restrictions.

I will be heading out Wed Jun 28th so I will call the ranger's office before departing to get an update and will post back where to meet since there is no cell phone reception. In either case, don't forget to get your fire permits.

Hopefully this change wont deter anyone from going. As of now we have 5-6 PUP members interested.

Yup, just like last year. Gathering dead wood is ok. No outside wood.

    Yep,
Most places I camp it is the same way, only cut up downed trees.

I have asked to fell an obvious dead tree and explained I'm from MN and grew up with a wood stove, each time the rangers said go for it once I leave, but don't drop it on the fence!! lol

The DW & I will try to make it there on 6/29. Just not sure driving in one day from Phoenix without trailer--is this doable or not? I have plenty of time, but the DW has only four day off--until 7/2.

Well, it's doable but it'll be a long 500+ mile haul. Google Maps shows it about 9 1/2 hours coming up the I10 without stopping or considering towing. Looking at the route, you'd be heading in my direction (looks about half way). It takes me about 3 1/2 hours to get up to Lake Isabella/Kernville area and about 1 1/2 hours to the camp from there so 5 1/2 to 6 hours including a fill up stop. From my house to Phoenix, it takes me about 5 hours (not towing)... So maybe looking at a 12+ hour drive???

    Update:

Location: Lloyd Meadows at Freeman Creek Trailhead
    GPS Coordinates: (36.145572,-118.493294)
    Current Fire Restrictions: None

*** If fire restrictions are in place prior to leaving, we will rendezvous at Camp 2... TBD.

    Haybale - 1 adult, 1 kid, arriving 6/29
    shuang2 - 2 adults, arriving 6/29

Also, I will not be planning a potluck for this rally since with my group alone, we will be trying to feeding a small army in itself. I figure we'll all be in the same general area that we wont have to go looking for each other.

I will post a map with more details soon...

Some reading material for the area...

    Things to do:
Freeman Creek Trail - We will be camping at the bottom of this trail so for us, it's going to be East to West. The climb mentioned will be on the first half of the trail.
George Bush Tree - About 1.25 miles from camp (see map)
Fork Of The Kern Trail - About 3.25 miles from camp (see map)
Peppermint Creek Falls - About 7.75 miles from camp (see map)
Natural Water Slides - About 13.1 miles from camp (see map)
Camp 2 Rock Slides (smaller kid friendly) - About 17.2 miles from camp (see map)
Trail Of 100 Giants - About 27.9 miles from camp (see map)
Dome Rock - About 37.2 miles from camp (see map)
Needles Lookout Trail - About 42.6 miles from camp (see map)
Golden Trout Pack Trains Horseback Riding - About 47.8 miles from camp (see map)

    Water:
Johnsondale - Off Mountain Hwy 99 (20 miles before camp)
Lower Peppermint Campground - on Forest Route 22S82 (8 miles before camp)
At the end of Forest Route 22S82 - 2.3 miles past camp

    Dump Station:
    Lake Isabella KOA
    Auxiliary Dam Campground

    Store:
There is a small convenience store at Johnsondale and plenty of grocery stores in Kernville and Lake Isabella. There is also an ice factory in Lake Isabella if needed.

I just checked with the Forest Rangers out there and there is no fire restrictions in our area, so we're good to go. Just don't forget your campfire permit (here) if you want to have a camp fire. We'll be leaving tomorrow AM at daybreak!

Here the weather forecast for the area. Our camp will be at around 5,800 ft in elevation which puts us somewhere in between Johnsondale and Ponderosa. Im guessing it will be cooler than Johnsondale and hotter than Ponderosa during the day. Either way, lots of sun, which means lots of shade

I had a big project come up at work, so we will either be later than planned, or maybe not make it at all. I'm not ready to give up yet, but it doesn't look good.
