    Hello all,

    I am a first time popup camper owner. I want to install an A/C on the roof. I already have a vent there. I have searched amazon and google trying to find an A/C to no avail. I checked with the authorized dealer for my brand (Jayco) in the area and they wanted $1,000 to purchase and install the A/C. I can do it myself if I can just find an A/C. Any advice on where to go to buy one? Any brands you recommend? Does anyone know where to buy second hand A/Cs? Like a junk yard, etc...? Thanks for any insight you may provide.

    Craigslist - rv section. I've seen used units there on occasion.

    Careful buying a used one. Just make sure it is a working unit! Otherwise you will be spending time troubleshooting a problem. I know for our pup the dealer had to use a Fleetwood/Coleman A/C install kit. Check to see if you need an A/C install kit for your pup.

    We installed a new unit in May of 2014. It's a Coleman Mach 8 low profile unit. 13,500 BTU. Including installation by our dealer it came to $1,200. The unit weighs 90 lbs. It's a great unit, we are happy with it.

    The only units I've seen in craigslist are portable units.

    Did they install some type of brace in the interior of your roof? My local dealer said that if I were to do it that I would need to add a brace.

    I'm in central New York near Syracuse. There are some units that come up on Craigslist for around 2-300. I don't know about how well they work as I've never inquired on any of them. I have a rooftop unit on my HTT. Guess it depends on the area.

    @stud muffin,
    Our pup has two interior roof braces it came with from the factory. I will assume if yours doesn't have braces then you will need them. I would check with Jayco what is required for an A/C install.

    By the way, I was going to ask where you got the Stud Muffin name, but I don't think I wanna know!!

    Make sure you have a brace. The previous owner put one on my camper, but now I have to take it all the way off and brace the roof and put it back on. It has a sag in the center that would just let water pool there if I don't fix it.

    Another first time pop up owner here..

    Has anyone tried using a portable A/C unit for their pop up? I have one without air but am trying to avoid installing a roof unit (due to the cost).

    Interested to hear your thoughts!

    There are two braces inside the pup roof. They are specifically placed on each side of where the A/C unit is. The pup came with the braces from the factory.
