About 2:30 AM this morning, my beloved Lilly took her final breath after 11 years of giving us joy, laughter, love and - yes, a few headaches.

    <img src="http://inlinethumb31.webshots.com/42014/1447323108058778913S500x500Q85.jpg" border=0>

She seemed fine when I let her out yesterday morning. Last night, her breathing was very labored, she would not eat or drink and she cuddled in with me, but drooled uncontrollably. I feared the worst and planned to call the vet first thing this morning.

Wish me luck and pray for me through the final processes. 11 years ago when my 14 year old collie, Damien, needed to be put to rest - I was blubbering too much to operate the shovel. My BIL had to do the work while I sobbed like a damn baby. I fear this funeral will be even more difficult.

Sorry to here that you lost Lily. My Frank is a dachshund as well and he is my little guy. He is having problems right now and I would have to hate to go through what you are going through right now. She was so young compared to the dachshund life span. Any idea what happened?

    Dave,
Sorry to hear about your dear doggie. As for crying like a baby, let it out. Bottling it up will only make it worse. A few years ago when I had to put my cat to rest I cried for three days straight and and for the longest time afterwards everytime I would see one the same colors, I would get all choked up. The only cure for me was to get another kitty. Our prayers are with you and your family.

My wife and I have been there more times than I care to mention. They are our friends, companions, and even adversaries at times but they all take a piece of our heart when they go.

I have spent many a night, shovel in hand, crying my eyes out under the light of my kerosene lamp. With my wife by my side and our loved one at our feet wrapped in their favorite blanket, all of us waiting for me to prepare that special final resting spot.

Have strength Dave and when the time is right you will find that place in your heart for your next new special friend.

    You are in our thoughts.

I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Lilly. Your post brought tears to my eye's as I know the empty feeling of losing a best friend. My dog's are a very big part of my life. Let the tears flow and cry like a baby...she was part of your family.

Everytime I come across a post like this. I share this poem. Having two Yorkies(Who went to the Never Mind Academy for dogs)it chokes me up thinking of the inevitable. I have a feeling my reaction will be as yours. My thoughts go out to you and your little buddy. I hope this helps.

    Rainbow Bridge
    Author: unknown
There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth.
It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of all its beautiful colors.
Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows,
hills and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.
There is always food and water and warm spring weather.
The old and frail animals are young again.
Those who were sick, hurt or in pain are made whole again.
There is only one thing missing,
they are not with their special person who loved them so much on earth.
So each day they run and play until the day comes
when one suddenly stops playing and looks up!
The nose twitches! The ears are up!
The eyes are staring and this one runs from the group!
You have been seen and when you and your special friend meet,
you take him in your arms and hug him.
He licks and kisses your face again and again -
and you look once more into the eyes of your best friend and trusting
    pet.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together never again to be apart.

Sherry - Well, I was pretty dumbfounded when I found her in the state she was in last night. Besides the other symptoms I mentioned, she felt very bloated. When my wife and I were talking about it this morning, Betsy reminded me that Lilly only ever came into heat one time. I told that to the vet several times, but he never seemed too concerned about it. In reality, she probably should have been spayed several years ago. I really feel she died of complications of female problems, but I can only speculate.

I was always so particular not to let her (or Daphne, our other dachshund) jump, for fear of back problems. Well, we never had back problems, but..... BTW, Daphne is 10 years old and SHE is the one in bad health. Just this year, she was diagnosed as diabetic and we give her insulin twice a day. Since March, she has lost half her body weight and within the past two weeks she has gone, what I believe to be, probably 90% blind. Her eyes are cloudy and she walks into walls..... it's sad. I REALLY expected Lilly to outlive Daphne by several years. Goes to show you what I know.

Dave,My little dog, Marmaduke was diagnosed as diabetic back in July and I am still trying to get it under control. He lost a lot of weight. He also went blind within a month and he walks into walls, tries to fall down stairs...it's so sad to watch. But I guess he has become the spolied one out of the other 5. He get's carried down all stairs and gets to go for his walk just me & him, And not to mention the extra food and special treats he gets just to try and gain weight. I take him to the vet every 2 weeks for blood tests and it's going so slow getting his blood sugar down...I just hope I have him a bit longer.Just last month we took him camping for a week and he was a little unsure outside, but once he was inside the pup you could tell he felt at home and was safe, he been a great camping buddy over the years! Good luck with Daphne I hope you have her for many more years.
