My heart is with you, Dave. 41 years ago, the very first week that the hubby and I were married, he came through the door, grinning from ear to ear, and holding a mixed terrier puppy. We had "Heidi" for many years, and have always had a dog since. Big ones and little ones, inside dogs and outside dogs.

When you loose a pet, it is a very real stab of pain. I believe that they teach us many things about love and loss. I can't imagine life without a furry companion. I am sorry for your hurt. NJR

Dave - so sorry to hear of your loss. People who have pets understand they are such a part of the family. They love you unconditionally, all the time. Give yourself time to grieve...<img src=../Images/icons/icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle alt="Sad">

Sorry Dave. Good pets truely become members of the family and their passing is just as hard sometimes. I am always amazed that any animal can show so much love to a human. I don't think there is anything better than having an animal love and trust you. Just as with having to deal with every death, time is the best healer. Until then a few good cries won't hurt you either. take care!

I am so sorry for your family's loss of your beloved Lilly.

I am also a 'Rainbow Bridge' believer. if it's a choice between people heaven and Dog heaven, I want to go where they go!

I have 2 German Shepherds and 3 Goldens waiting for me at the bridge, and the only thing that makes it bearable to lose them is knowing that they each had wonderful lives with our family and knew how very much they were loved, right til the end - as I'm sure Lilly knew she was loved. Their lives are terribly & sadly short, but for Lilly, Daphne, and the other furbabies mentioned here, they are obviously very rich in the only thing that matters to them - the love of their families.

    Dave,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Don't you dare try to hold those tears in. When I lost my little Harlie I wailed for hours and called of work for 3 days. They are indeed our babies, we love and care for them for years and they become part of the family (through the good and bad, just like our human family). So morn your baby so, in time, you can let her go.

We laid Lilly to rest in the shade of a pine tree in our back yard yesterday morning. It was a sad time for all of us. Even the usually emotionless Elizabeth cried as we all group hugged around her grave.

Today, we celebrated young life as it was Robert's 7th birthday. What a weekend of highs and lows.

    David,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family through this difficult time. I was so sorry to hear of your loss and understand how you are feeling as we just lost our best friend Winston this year. Time will help heal the wounds but you will always have those wonderful memories to cherish. For now you can give all that extra pet love to Daphne - I know she will appreciate it. They always know when something is wrong.

Very sorry for your loss. I can see from the posts on here that a lot of people share your strong connection to their dogs.

I read two things after the loss of my dog almost 10 years ago that has stuck with me:

"The best place to bury a good dog is in your heart"

"The final cause of dogs having such short lives is in compassion to the human race. For if we suffer so much in losing a dog after an acquaintance of ten to twelve years, what would it be if they were to live double that time?"

I also developed a dog plan. I got a new dog-Tiger- soon after the passing of Peanut 10 years ago. When Tiger was about 5 years old I went out and got Kazoo. Now I know that someday I will make my last trip to the vet with Tiger and it will be no easier then with Peanut. But I know that when I get home I will be able to pick up Kazoo and hug her and not have that empty “no dog” feeling in my heart.
