A Yellowstone Question and an unextended PUP bunk

Hi!
We have a 16' Outback and with bunks extended, a 16' StarCraft Pup. I reserved a 30' site in the Grant Campground with a 8'x8' rent site. All 40' are gone, but I will keep an eye out for cancelations between now and June.

So I have 2 questions.:

1) The total length of car +PUP when both bunks extended is 32'. The end bunk is the Twin size so if there is an overhang, that would be the bunk that would overhang. If there is no obstruction (tree or boulder), is a 2' overhang at the back allowed? Is there any wiggle room if we manually swung the PUP to angle it into the space?

2) In the event for whatever reason we can't accommodate that extra 2', an option would be to not extend the back bunk and leave it in the trailer. My 15 year old 105
Lb daughter sleeps on that end. Would/could the bunk runner rails get damaged if she sleeps on the bed when if is not extended? It does mean we wouldn't be able to use the sink or table (which would be a drag for a week) but this idea is a backup option in case we can't make the extra 2' work.

When you say 32’ with the bunk out I assume you mean the Pup is not hitched to the TV ? So you need to know the total length of the camper open + TV is 32’ ? You should be fine at Grant

Good question. I think we would have to unhitch the TV as the hitch is directly under the front bunk. So yes we would need an extra 6" or so, but no more. 32 was giving 16' to the car and 16' to a fully open PUP.

Can't speak for the campground your going to. However the campgrounds I go to the rule is, all tires have to be somewhere on the parking pad. So I have often angled my car enough to make it fit on the parking pad. Or even turned the car around so that the hood of the car can slightly fit under the front bunk. Also so long as the camper tires are still on the parking pad the overhang past that is open so long as there aren't any obstructions behind you. Thankfully 90% of the time the places I go almost always had at least a feet open behind the parking pad. So if your only talking about a couple feet, I think you should be fine.

Oh, totally. We would fit a 30' if we had that type of a site. Is that what a common 30' site is like at Grant?

I think you'll be fine. I saw a Freightliner pulling a fifth wheel shoehorned into a 40-foot pull-thru site at Madison.

If you have a back-in site there is no issue hanging over as long as nothing is in the way.

As you can see from my last post, the one at Grant was a pass-through site. The other type is normally a box where you can put the camper and TV side by side. I had one at Bridge Bay and as you can see, I had the back bunk hanging out past the paved area, no issues.

Right , and if you look at steves set up he could have gone back further. Good idea to mesure out with a pace or arms to gustamite your rear bed room. Also, if you stagger the tv real close you can fit pretty much anywhere. You have this, just messure a bit before you set up and say, I could have backed up 2 feet more. Lol

Well, no. If you look you can see a tree branch touching the back bunk. The rangers don't take to kindly to people cutting branches off their trees.

Once or twice I've had to park in overflow parking when we haven't fit. The walk can be a pain but it's generally empty handed.

Lol, you are correct, I didnt see that. I do have a small saw for just in case. I get not cutting branches, but latelty upkeep on places has been spotty at best.

I watched as a family group was removed from a park in Colorado two summers ago. "Walmart Woodsmen" was how the camp hosts described them. They were practicing their "extreme survival skills" while camping for the first time anywhere (which happened to be in a developed campground with electric and water.)

I felt kinda bad for them. I believe they truly had no idea the harm they were doing with the hatchets, shovels, etc.

I asked a camp host if I could trim a limb that was sagging a lot. They said no but came back that day with appropriate gear and did it themselves.

You will almost certainly be fine. We were there this past summer and almost all of the sites were more than long enough for a popup and your tow vehicle. You will get assigned a spot when you check in but ask about a site with more favorable views or distance to a bathroom. We had our choice of several and got what we thought was the best one.

To add to the question, there are a few 20' w tent sites left at Canyon. Should we just be content we have a 30' site, or would the 20' be worth the gamble if Canyon is a much better campground? The last thing I want to do is drive all that way any luck is not on our side and there are trees or boulders blocking any potential overhang.

I am thrilled we got a 30' and I will keep an eye out for any cancelations on the 40'. Grant seems to be a great location more or less mid-park.

We're I you, I would keep my eye open for a 30 or 40 at Canyon, not a 20.

I agree. I feel we have options with the 30' at Grant as we could in a pinch not extend the narrower bunk. It wouldn't be ideal, but it would be doable.

Grant is also a good location for a base camp for seeing Yellowstone and Grand Teton.

While you're out that way, consider a trip up the Beartooth Highway. One of America's must beautiful byways.
