That is awesome. What kind of winch did you get? We have a manufacture here where I live that builds all kinds of winches, and I can get a refurbished ATV winch from them for 50 bucks. I have been thinking about making that addition.

Good stuff! I love the winch I added to my 73 Starcraft. Life is so much easier.

    Cheers

Ok, got the winch put on just does not seem to have enough to raise it all the way, I was thinking that I read somewhere that You have to remove all the excess cable off of the spool, just want to be sure before I do......I would have thought that a 3000 lbs winch would be enough to raise the roof.....

Possibly a limit switch on the winch? Just a thought

You are correct. The winch will be rated 3000lbs at the best ratio. IE; up to the first layer of cable. As the layers build, the ratio decreases, like gears.

I had the same issue until I removed all the cable except the length needed for full lowering of the roof (and a small bit extra) but the entire amount was not even one complete layer of cable on the spindle.

Don't worry either. There will be plenty of spare cable you cut off to do it over again if you make a mistake.

    Cheers.

Just out of curiosity where is the winch mounted? I don't know anything about the Jayco lift system and am trying to wrap my head around how it would work.

My winch mounts under the door side seat, the manual crank went in the front of camper through the access hole. So I mounted it right to the existing bracket.

does the winch need any kind of stop mechanism for when the unit is cranked up? Or would the tension on the winch be sufficient? WOuldn't want it releasing and letting the roof down. Any input on that? Or a spec on the type of winch needed? This mod sounds great and affordable!

On my mod, I use no limit sensors/switches. I watch for the canvas sidewalls approaching "taut". Lowering is not an issue. As for "giving out", should not be an issue either. If the winch can handle raising the roof, it should not slip. And of course you use safety supports, right? [;)]

    Cheers.

good to know. & yes on the safety supports. My winch is on the tongue and looks to be a fairly simple swap.

Looks like a good project for the winter! Key now is to pick up an appropriate winch at a great price!

If your Skamper is anything like mine, it looks like a super simple swap. The hardest part would be just rethreading the cable thru the lift tube and wiring up the power winch.

For those of you considering this project, here is a link to a seller who is selling Carefree of Colorado's winch for $149.
