Does anyone have any experience with AGM deep cycle batteries and are they a worthwhile upgrade? I did a search of this site and couldn't find any discussions.

There were several discussions I believe most considered the gain not worth the money I myself also think that.

Flooded Marine-RV batteries are so cheap it is hard to justify AGM costs. None of them last forever. So I will be buying a new pair of Marine/RV batteries.

Personal choice - for me AGM offer advantages I consider worth the cost, wouldn't ever buy flooded again for RV use.

I could never justify the price increase over the wet cells. I couldn't get any longer life from the AGM's. I had a lot of equipment come OEM with AGM's. I switched back to wet cell bats and even with having to replace chargers I came out ahead

Why do you think you need AGM's? This subject interests me as I am fighting excess tongue weight and considering bringing the batteries indoors behind the axle.

Then I should assume THESE are out of the question? ;)

They only cost a grand each!

I never said I think I need them, just trying to get information on their suitability for a camper. There have been a lot of changes to battery technology in the past few years and like most technologies it is probably better to learn from others experience before jumping in.

They are only out of the question if the price is too high for you.

I'm not an expert by any means but interior use is one of the largest advantage to AGM from what i'v read.. wet cell off gassing is what your looking to avoid?

I also understand an AGM can be discharged lower without damage, so long as it's recharged correctly? Would solar upgrades later be dependant on battery style?

East Penn is the largest US battery manufacturer. Those interested in AGM batteries might like to read through this Valve Regulated Lead Acid Technical Manual ...

    http://www.eastpenn-deka.com/assets/base/0139.pdf

Advantages / disadvantages of various types of lead acid batteries are summarized on Page 9, 'though IMO the entire document deserves a read.

No, most any controller has battery type selector (wet, sealed (agm) and gel). More and more are including Li as an option. Some are even programmable to match specific battery makers recommendations.

off cell gassing is not an issue for interior wet cell batteries with a proper battery box and venting to the outside. The only long term problem with inside wet cells (flooded) is that I'll bet they are harder to access for maintenance than if they were on the tongue! But that's only once a month.

One could use SLA but venting is still recommended.

On the advice of my engineer boss, I bought an Optima group 31 blue top AGM battery for my clipper's house. I put an Optima group 24 red top AGM for the engine battery.

I've been very happy with them. Have had them since 2016 and they are still working great. Even after 10 days I have plenty of battery power left. I don't need solar or a generator. I don't have to do any maintenance. While they were more expensive than wet cell batteries, I don't regret them.

My boss has a pair in his sprinter for over 10 years now and they are still running great.

When my FnR batteries need replacing, I will go with AGM again.

    This is not a problem.

Has anyone ever seen a vented battery box design?

    Thanks Rabird,

The great battery sage is still 2 or 3 months in the future but have been pondering it. I was just wondering if anyone has been down this road before to take advantage of their experience.

My apologies to the original poster for hijacking his thread.
