Hi, We bought a used '86 Jayco J Series 1008 last year. We really enjoy camping in it. My question is, since we travel with a dog and with the recent hot spell, is there anyway to cool the camper. I asked if we could get an a/c unit installed and we were told that this was not possible. Any suggestion? Thanks!

You roof may not have the supports needed for a standard RV A/C unit. There are a lot of people who have installed standard window units, either by cutting through the body or rigging it so it's in the canvas, just above the top rail of the box.

If you use a window unit, you'll need a pretty large one. The ones installed in PUPs are usually 13,500 BTU.

Thanks for the information! We have a german Shepherd that we travel with and we do not want her to get too hot during the days we are in the camper. Thanks!

Mab, I have a 1984 Starcraft 24', I am using a 10k BTU unit, through the window next to the door. This past weekend, it was 90+ here, and comfortable during the day and night. I made a stand to hold the unit outside and poke the front through the opening. I simply roll the canvas up to install it.

    Hi there...
This may be a bit late...but I have a shepard rottie cross, and I just use a fan for her...the only reason is I had asked the vet about the air conditioning and his warning even in the house was if the air conditioner malfunctions it starts blowing hot air...and that can kill pets in an enclosed area....
Not sure if that would happen in the trailer but just thought I would share that with you...

    Happy camping

Tally, I never even gave that a thought! I just purchased a 10k BTU and we are installing this weekend. I guess I will leave a fan on as well if we leave for a short period of time.

My oldie but goodie 77'Venture has a new 5050 BTU window unit A/C. I mounted it into what has been called the "Swinger door". The dimensions of the unit are 17" wide, 12" tall and 14" deep. It cooled it down in a hurry.
