We've struggled this summer with bike transport. Second hitch on the TV didn't work (my 28 year old Viking doesn't have a lot of tongue length), then I ignored all the conventional wisdom about hitches on the back bumper. Had to strap my bike rack upright and still dealt with horrible sway problems (making matters worse, my TV is an 1989 Wrangler so it's not the tightest drive anyway).

Read the other custom roof rack thread and really liked the design, but only 1 of our bikes has a front wheel quick disconnect. So I decided to ignore more conventional wisdom and make something out of PVC, with a 2x4 base.

This is what I came up with (similar but not identical to others I found on Google). It's on its maiden voyage right now and so far, so good!

Not bad. If you used standard PVC just keep it out of the sun when not in use and it should last a long time. It generally cost a little more, but furniture grade and electrical PVC are UV resistant.

If you get a lot of vibration and buzzing from the straps, give them one twist. This prevents harmonics from developing.

I actually painted it with multiple coats of Krylon Fusion for that very reason. (kids picked the color scheme.) I looked at furniture grade but Home Despot was charging close to 5x what regular schedule 40 costs.

I thought the pvc looked oddly pinkish, but just assumed it must be the light [8D]
