Okay, I have a problem, on our way to the CG this past weekend my electrical harness (for the PUP) broke from it's clip and drug on the road far enough to cut through the outer cover and split some of the interior wires...sorry I'm not good at posting pics. It was enough to not allow me running lights, or breaks on my PUP on the return trip home. Luckily I'm good at handling the trailer and we were only an hour away. My question is, can I cut into the harness and splice the wires together or will I need a whole new harness? I know if I take it to the dealer they're going to tell me the latter. Any thoughts as I need to splice only three of the wires and I'd probably have my mechanic do it just in case there's something amiss.
Cut and splice with either heat shrinkable butt connectors or cut and splice with solder and heatshrink. Use heatshrink on the spliced wires, then slide another large diameter piece over the repaired area and heatshrink that as well..
The last few cars that I've had were pre-wired for a plug-in harness. I would check to see if it's possible to unplug the old and plug in a new. Simple and done right.
these work well https://www.harborfreight.com/30-pack-watertight-heat-shrink-butt-connectors-66729.html and then this https://www.harborfreight.com/42-piece-marine-heat-shrink-tubing-67598.html both have adhesive lining.
I realize that your post was a couple of months ago, but Here's what I did: I had a damaged and poorly repaired wiring harness with an old 3-prong connector. I bought a replacement 7 pin connector with an 8' cable terminating in a weatherproof junction box. Wasn't cheap, but it resulted in a good permanent fix.
