My DH had the same concerns so we picked up a 86 Skamper fro about $1500. Even if we didn't use it we would have been able to sell it for that or a little less... wouldn't have been out much.. but we LOVE it. We use it around 4 or 5 nights a month starting in late April early May through late September early October. We are looking to upgrade which will extend our season even more!

We have a jayco 10 ft box, and love it.
We were tent campers for years, took the plunge 2 years ago.

We go out from May to November, at least 1 trip a month,
    May is 3 days
    June is 5 days
july is usually twice and both 3 days
    August usualy 2 weeks
September/'october, long weekend, plus usually a 4-5 day trip for fall colours
November is hit and miss depending on how cold it gets. if we go, and have, it is a long weekend - 3 to 4 days

So all told, about 40 days per year - love it!!

Unfortunately, the winters up here prevent any more.

Done pulled the TRIGGER! Just bought a 2003 Coleman Santa Fe. It is like new! Comes with lots of extras to boot. My wife loves the idea of the outside shower and the two stoves (one in and one out). Stepper door and awning are awesome. Headed out Monday to tow it home!

Congrats on your purchase! I have been wrestling with the same question you were. Borrowed a friend's Coleman Tahoe last year for a weekend, and I thought the stepper door was awesome too. Wish everybody's camper came with them! I know you'll enjoy that Santa Fe.

In 2012 we camped 17 nights in 5 trips out. Figuring the cost of our used PUP, cost of inventory (some we had from tent camping) and fuel to travel, I truly believe that it is far cheaper than a therapist and much more us time.

    Awesome!!

When we first got ours we used it a lot more then we do now. In fact we used it a lot more then we thought we would!

But both the kids and the wife are telling me we need to do some more camping.

    Enjoy your new toy!

"How much do you use you Pop Up?"
That's the real question for me.
If I pay 9-10K for a camper and only use it 6-8 X / year and keep it 5-6 yrs works out to $190 per night.
Me thinks still tent camp in the BLM on 4x4 trails.
    No neighbors, kids, generators etc.
Our state campgrounds are run by nazis.
    Still deliberating.

You will LOVE the Santa Fe it is one of the best and most popular lay outs they made. Does it have the ABS or alumilite roof? they changed mid year. We have had ours for 8 years and now camp 30-35 days a year.

We were big tent campers for years, usually 12-14 nights per year. We bought and remodeled our first PUP last year and used it 16 nights in 5 months in 2012. It's easy to hook up and go on spontaneous trips to the local lakes even in the winter months. If camping is in your blood, then go for it!

We used the pup enough in 2 years. That we moved to a TT. We use it even more.

We camp 15 to 25 nights per year.

Don't forget that you are not all in on a camper, there is always resale value. Taking good care of the pup and buying right will help keep the overall expenditures down when it comes time to sell.

20 days this year are planned- but will book at least one or two more trips for another 6 - 8 days or so.

We like doing long weekends, take of Thursday and come home Sunday...

Looking at about 21 nights or more this summer. Kind of depends on how hot of a summer we have. Most will be as a cheap hotel room, but will be "real" camping besides. Looking forward to the warmer weather!

We also use our camper as a cheap hotel room (with familiar beds and surroundings, which is a plus) on some trips. When we renovated the previous pup, an '84 Palomino, it cost about twice what we had estimated it would. However, that first summer, I took it on a 2-1/2 week trip east to visit family, and we estimated we saved at least the amount of the over-budget figure by using the pup as a hotel. It also gave me a chance to walk around the campgrounds after being in the car all day, but eliminated hauling my luggage into a hotel room.
