There were no poker sticks left behind at the CG's we stayed at this year. I was very disappointed [:(] as this hasn't happened b4.
B4 the second trip, I went out to the shed to see if I had any large dowels or stakes of some kind. I noticed that I had 2 hoes hanging... I cut the head off one of them and now I carry my own 5 foot hickory fire poker stick. [:D]

My in-laws always said, "If you play with the fire, you're going to wet the bed."
Has anyone else ever heard that saying, or did my in-laws just make that up?

I haven't heard it before and I wish I hadn't just read it, either.

My dad used to tell me that when I was growing up and we were camping. Said it to my wife last time we went and she had never heard it.

Use to hear that all the time from my mom when we were camping. Now tell my grandkids that same thing.

I too used to get told that by my parents. Must be a regional thing.

Never heard of that wet to bed thing, but wasn't here something about hair growing in the palm of your hand ... no, wait ... that was something else!

When the poking stick goes in the fire, everyone knows camping is over. It's a tradition with us, and not a happy one.

Once I find a good poking stick, I usually keep it for a few trips. DH has learned he likes poking the fire around too. Hey, at least he's not breaking anything! [LOL] [LOL]

When I camp for Merlefest, we all burn our site stakes with our names on them, on the very last night. Sigh It is a bittersweet night, but still with LOTS of jamming!!

I make it a habit to dump fresh water on the ash and clean out the pit before we leave
A clean camp site with no evidence of prior occupants or as I always say leave it the way you found it. if I find my site is a mess when I get there I ask the park to clean it or move me to a clean site

My PUP was missing the 1/2" rod to adjust the stabilizers so I bought a 3'x1/2" iron rod from Lowe's, I had a piece of scrap 1/2" CPVC about 14" long so I drove it on the end of the iron rod as a handle, I then drove a 3" long piece of PVC on that to act as a Handle stop, this has become my "All around - stabilizer handle, fire poker, walking stick, critter hitter... Tool". [;)]

We always say the smoke follows beauty and/or money! My in-laws went with us for the first time in October and the smoke bothered them the whole time!

My DH is from Arkansas and has always told the kids and is still telling the grandkids that. I've always said smoke follows beauty, too, until a friend told us his grandfather told him that smoke follows stupid. Now, I try to quietly move when the smoke comes at me.

Shovel. End of story. You can really get in and reset your fire. Also, a great tool for scattering ashes and coals when time for bed. Pretty easy to pack. And, esp. if you have a dog, shovels are good for other tasks, too.

Once you go shovel, you'll never go back to stick.

Also, most developed campgrounds have camp hosts. Those hosts usually clean up around the fire pit after the last campers. Fire poking sticks often look like half-burned wood and are among the things that said hosts discard during their cleaning efforts.

took mine last weekend to the Everglades and scouting for wood found 2 poker sticks left behind at 2 sites!. we gave 1 to a camper neighbor going on a swamp walk.
Drove my TV to work, 2 blocks!, it was raining and my poker stick is in truck but so is the rug and it smells musty, PU [8D]
