This was a very nice place to camp, as our favorite, Long Key SP was closed for renovations. Only 28 miles from Key West, and Big Pine Key just a few miles west is home to the Key Deer preserve. My only gripe, they don't have firewood available at the park. They do have picnic grills instead of firerings, but we made that work for Thanksgiving dinner. The sites are close together, but the foliage encloses them so well, you have privacy. The bath house was very well maintained and spotless. Swimming, snorkeling, kyak rentals, and the old Bahia Honda bridge are the attractions.

I love this campground. Only downside is that you have to book well well in advance.

I used to tent camp there in the 70s. It was $3 a night a didn't need a reservation for a beach side campsite. The old bridge was still intact back then.
I need to get back soon.

Great park to camp at! Only downfall is booking 11 months in advance!

My parents used to take us to Bahia Honda in the 70's. I have taken my kids here the past 3 summers and have reservations for this summer as well. This is my favorite place to camp.

Apparently that is the case anywhere on the beach in Florida [:O] :). Growing up in SC, we always camped on the Atlantic coast. But since moving to extreme west GA, we have been introduced to the beauty of the Gulf Coast. Due mainly to the comments here on the Portal, Bahia Honda and Long Key are definitely on my bucket list! (I wonder if these two SPs are considered Gulf of Mexico or Caribbean.)

Actually, I would consider them the Atlantic! But, it would be Atlantic and Gulf!

October is also school season... [:D] When we go, we like to stay a whole week. I already take my kids out during Thanksgiving week every year. So, I need to go there during the summer.

when you live in FLA and 6 mos of the year is hurricane season you tend to take your chances :) Thats like not going up north cause winter is snow season. If people want to stay away because it is hurricane season more room for us hahahahaha. Lets keep our fingers crossed though :)
