decided since we were on vacation near here, we would check it out, see whats what, and do little hiking/swimming at the "natural Spring"

1st off, the caverns is a nice hike and interesting as a walk through history. however, it was not worth the $$$ imho....

the cg sites were all on top of each other and there was virtually no privacy, plus the park rangers were constantly Helping to monitor the fires. (ie turning your fires over, shuffling the fire wood etc etc. for you) the dump station was disgusting and waste deposits were all over the ground

last but not least the natural spring designated for swimming, was just that... ALL NATURAL ! large turtles, alligators and tons of fish. it was filthy, overgrown with pond weeds, and had no egress in or out that was safe. plus there was a large oily film through out the pond.

I have visited several FL natural springs and never saw anything like this. Wekiva Springs is the absolute epitomy of what a spring should be. including a complete underwater fence.

I will never return to the florida caverns spring.

I am not one to force my humble opinions on anyone, so be the judge for yourself.

We had a different experience. We stayed there a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. The caverns were interesting, the campsites pretty much empty, and we took the side trip to Falling Waters SP. (It was the dry season, and the waters were not falling).
We liked the isolation way on top of the hill. The Rangers were most helpful, and not in our 'face'. We actually planned to stay one more day, and do more exploring, but the Weatherman said get out'o-town, since tornadoes were coming. We cut the trip short by one one day to get to safer ground. But we liked the quiet, the caves, and the rangers were not imposing at all.

We are now in Falling Waters SP just a few miles from Florida Caverns SP. Friends of ours just joined us here who were staying there and they said that the swimming area is closed now due to lack of rain and flow from the springs there. They liked the campground, though.
