This is the most beautiful park wehave ever been to!!! The campsites in Old Prairie are private and well maintained. I was showing pics to friends and they said it looked like we camped at Gilligans Island. It's just a short drive to Siesta Beach. Highly recommend this park.

That awesome! I was actually looking for information on this park since we're heading there this weekend. A little curious about it since they have alligator issues, even the ranger told me on the phone that they sometimes wander into the sites. I was curious since I have a small dog and a very nervous DW. Did you have any run-in's with gators? Which site did you have? We plan on going to Siesta Key for a few hours one of the days...its a great beach!

    Superdad,
We did not see any at the site...we did see them in the park at the river. We too have small dogs that we take camping. We heard some strange noises after dark and calmly went into the camper. This is an awesome park!!! I think you will enjoy it!!!

Well I have been meaning to add to this post for a week or so now. We went to Myakka river for a one night get away and it was a great trip. I had previously said I would not do the one nighters because of the time for setup but this park was worth it. We had a nice spot, they are not the private spots that I am used to (you can see everyone around you) but the bathhouses were clean and we were across from it which was a plus for the DW.

The park has a 7 mile scenic drive that we took in the evening. We saw atleast a dozen deer roaming around and looking down off of the bridge were the gators. We stayed at Old Prairie which is a distance from the water for the sake of the gators. Also they have a "Canopy Walk"... you climb up a wooden spiral staircase 25 feet and walk across a bridge and your up in the canopy of the trees... then you climb up the other end to a height of 75 feet and you overlook the entire forest... amazing views!!!

Lastly the park is about 20/25 minutes to Siesta Key (our favorite beach). We will be back for sure. Unfortunately I forgot the camera!

We stay there when we go to the Tampa RV show in January. We have always had a good time there except for once when the Old Prairie camping area power supply burned out. We were there without power for two days in 30 degree weather. They have since rewired all of the sites. We went out at around 3 in the morning and could not believe all of the Deer. The were everywhere, just milling around in the middle of the road. We probably so at least 100 in one night. The air boat ride is a fantastic thing to do if it is running.

Trinity will join us late October... meaning our camping trips will be on hold for a short while. But it will all be worth it :)

We were trying to go there this weekend but full. I grew up close to here, and would love to get back there. Thanks for making up my mind for me.

Two thumbs up for Myakka River SP. We live in south Florida, about 4 hours from Myakka, and try to make it up there once every year or two at a minimum. It is my favorite campground in Florida. Highlands Hammock is not too far and also has nice facilities, but for wildlife viewing and just strolling around, Myakka is the place to be.

Very hard to make last minute weekend reservations at 95% of SP's in FL.

I have to say, that is the one thing I dislike about Florida camping...hard to do last minute camping trips :( A lot of times, planning ahead just isn't easy for us since we are so tight on the cash flow. Not to mention the "will it rain or not?" question during certain times of the year! You never know if there will be TD,TS, or Hurricane during the time you choose 6mo in advance!

yeah, I hear you both. And the cancellation penalties for SPs are pretty stiff too!!!!!

I can't make advance reservations due to DH's work. We never know when he has to work a saturday, which totally messes up the ENTIRE weekend.

We stayed here last year in tents during the YMCA Masters Swimming Nationals. It was fun but scary the first night. The raccoons attacked our cooler and since we were located near the garbage container they were dumpster diving at night and it was quite noisy.

This is a great place to camp if you know which sites to pick. The bath house was nice and clean.

We will be going again next year. I look forward to the trip since I just bought a used pop-up. A step up from the tent life.
