Wow, I haven't seen a single thing here about pups & fly fishing. I'm looking forward to settin up on a high mountain stream (after spring thaw)with my new to me pup & test driving my N T me bamboo fly rod that I refinished this winter. I might even do a little tying in our new pup. Any one else here do any fly fishing?

wow, its been years since I fly fished! I bought one a couple years ago, but it still sits there in the corner(I can see it at this moment next to the PC desk} but havn't had the time to try it out. I used to fly fish as a young boy, im 36 now, and was pretty good at it. never could could tie em though. Mountain stream, just me, fly rod, cold beers, birds n nature.....hmmmmmm..........think DW would approve?

When the dang wind stops blowing up here in north central Texas the wife and I will pull our fly rods out and go sunfishing. I fly fish as well as tie my own flies...best fly fishing day was 106 trout on the White River in Northern Arkansas, in TWO HOURS, ok so they were tiny ones, but still trout (hook, lift, take off fish, place fly back in water and repeat). Boy were my arms tired. I was at the right place at the right time, using a homemade black ant I tied myself. As soon as the fly touched the water it was slammed. A couple trout even jumped out of the water to get it but missed.

We went Monday on the Llano river. Caught one pretty nice bass on my 3wt. Had to try out my new kayak. DW and I both fly fish, we only camp where there is water;).

newbiecamper, take your flyrod out & do a little lawn casting & you will be hooked again, no pun intended.
Yellowkayak, "106 fish" That's the kind of day you would want a 5 year old along. What a thrill it would be to see a youngster catching fish like that.
I've never fished from a yak. I have thought about one for fishing, light weight, easy to handle. I just might have a few questions for you folks later on.

I just returned from a three day fly fishing trip on the Kern River. Or should I say a three day camping trip to watch the wind blow @15 to 30 MPH the whole time. Also the river which normaly runs about 600 to 700 CFS was running 1700 to 2000 CFS and was totaly unfishable. But I had a great time anyway. I used the time to tie more flies for the next trip.

Not only do I Fly Fish, but I tie all my own
flies and leaders. I got hooked about 5 years
ago and absolutely LOVE it. There are lots of
great Trout streams and rivers here in N.Carolina
and Virginia also. Although I practice catch and
release 99% of the time, I do enjoy a fresh
trout cooked over a campfire, and Sleeping in the
pup next to a stream or river is hard to beat.

I don't tie my own flies but I love fly fishing.
Yellowkayak I had a day like that up in Colorado a couple of years ago up on the Cimarron River where we go. I also fish the Gunnison River while up there the trout are bigger but never the number that I caught that one day on the Cimarron. Over 100 trout in about 100 yards of river. Every cast was another fish, what a day.

    Happy Camping!

I love this post, I live for fly fishing. I am excited to get the pup out (which I just bought this week) and hit some good rivers/lakes. This weekend we are taking it out and of course the fly rods are coming. I am in the process of teaching my 6 year old the sport. He loves it, I took him down to a local river that was just stocked a week earlier and it was like the trout farm, every cast, he ended up with about 30 trout in about 1 hour, (real big monsters at about 8-10 inches) it was literally cast, set, reel. He was hooked at that point. Now I have my 3 year old asking when it is his turn. Right now I am trying to figure out how to carry the ODC 1220 pontoon on top of the pup, I am hoping it will fit right over the A/C unit. I have attached one picture of my last trip to Island Park at Henry’s Lake in Idaho, me and my buddies had a great time, I ended up on one day bringing in 17 cuts/hybrids in 3 hours nothing under 20 inch I love those days.

    Ogeer3,

I never had another one of those 103 trout days, but my norm up there on the river was 30 - 50 trout in a 4 - 5 hour period. Only a five a day limit to take home was plenty for me, sense I knew how to fish the river with success. I use my own flies...no need to buy if I can tie them myself.

I always wanted to fish the Gunnison, but never had the chance...one day I will.

I am always amazed by the people who fly fish. I just love to sit and watch you all. You don't even want to know what type of mess I would have going on with that line if I tried it!

One of our camping trips this year there was a gentleman fly fishing and he just amazed me.

Missy, Once you get the hang of it (no pun intended) its easy. You already know how to do it, just by watching others...now get out there and buy a cheap started kit and have fun with it. Soon you'll be tying your own flies.

My husband flyfishes, ties his own flies, leaders, etc etc. Most of our trips (camping or otherwise), except our family summer vacation at the beach, revolve around flyfishing, the hatch, bugs, and things like that. Glad to know that there are others on here who like to "wet a line", and "stand in the river waving a big stick"

I live to fish. Actually heading to Montana tomorrow with my wife and will fish some. I will fish the Gibbon, Firehole, and possibly the Madison in Yellowstone.

I am picking up my New to me pop up in Michigan next month Fleetwood E1 and will fish the Ausable for a few days. Plan on camping next to the river in the PUP, that will be the good life. The trout streams in Missouri are ok but my heart is in Montana.

By the way Missy, don't be intimitaded by the sport. Get an inexpensive rod, learn a little about casting from a shop and have at it. It's always amazing to me how many people I see spin fishing for trout who struggle. They think flyfishing is difficult but in reality it is easier to catch trout on a fly rod.
