    Hi,
I’m new here and I have a question concerning my Ford Explorer towing capacity! Maybe some of you have experiment the same problem!
It is written in the ford towing manuel that if the towing paquage is not original, we can’t tow more than 2000 pounds because we don’t have the thing that can cool the transmission.... but the installator of my kit keep saying that I can tow 4500 pounds with it! (A 2 inch hitch)... what donyou think about that? Everybody I spoke with is surprised with this

I would think the installer was quoting the tow capacity of the vehicle in general. It's a good idea to have a transmission cooler in either case.

For starters go to a Ford dealer and have them check the V.I.N , they should be able to tell what weight your specific vehicle can tow and the maximum tongue weight (along other weights that will be more important latter).. I assume by your posting your vehicle does not have a factory tow package nor a factory tow prep package, so even by adding a hitch, transmission cooler, power steering cooler you will still be limited to that 2000 lbs tow rating.. Since on many vehicles a tow package also includes things like stiffer suspension, larger alternator, larger capacity rad, different transmission shift points (most of these today are done by the "tow/haul" button if equipped), and different gearing in the differentials.. Again it does depend on your vehicle.

Thank you Snow for the first common sense answer to towing capacity question that I have seen here.
So many take the tow capacity as gospel and put themselves and others in danger.

What year Explorer? FYI, after 10 years, Ford drops the vehicle information from their data base. At least they did until 2013 when I left. Go here and add your VIN https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/vindecoder.php
Depending on year, check your gear ratio tag on your rear axle cover, it will show what's there and if it's a locker or not.
Ford didn't always install a hitch as part of the tow prep.
    What engine?

I add the towing paquage last week! It is not an original one! If I understand well, there is absolutely no possibility to rearrange my truck to be able to tow a 2500 pop-up... the guy who installed my towing paquage garanty me that i’m ok ... I dont know what he is talking about.... sorry for my english

Oh, and Ford put some pretty squishy springs in all the Explorers, so some help might be needed there with almost anything over a couple hundred pounds of tongue weight.

    What year is your Explorer?
We have a 2012 with a factory tow package. It's tow limit is 5,000. It has the V6.

For those of you that have the Explorer. We just had a recall on it involving the rear toe links. Ford replaced them.

Verify the number with the sicker in the driver's door jamb or the number at the base of the windshield on the driver's side

The person who installed the hitch may be giving you the rating for the hitch. Just because the hitch has the rating doesn't mean the vehicle does.
