We had our first camping trip of '09 at High Falls State Park, just off of I75 south of Jackson, GA. We had a nice time, rented canoes, hiked a short easy trail, but there are plenty of other parks we want to visit before we'd return here. However, if you want a cg that is close to Atlanta, and easy to get to on a Friday evening, then High Falls is a good choice due to its proximity to Atlanta. I think it's also been listed as a good choice if you are passing through along 75. There seemed to be a lot of people who were going to the race at Atlanta Motor Speedway. I'm not sure where the night noise came from, if it was the highway or the waterfall, but I'd have to guess it was the highway. The sites didn't seem to be very private, but we didn't have anyone on either side of us, so it wasn't an issue. Maybe privacy will return with the spring greenery.

We've been going there the past couple of years. It's great if you have kids. There is a small waterpark right outside the park. But it does lack privacy. Your best bet is to get something right next to the river/stream.

We camped there once last year and had a good time.
True that there is not much privacy, but not much different from most SPs we have been to. We also like the fact that it is just 45 minute trip and are going back in week and a half.

Wish I had read this before I made reservations yesterday. The park appears to have good amenities so hopefully I can find a nice site with some privacy and hope that the A/C drowns out the noise. We are going more for the activities than for the quiet so we should be OK.

Hi, I was reading about High Falls State Park and I also just made reservations for there in later July on our way to the sp in Helen, Ga. I didn't know what the difference was in the two different site selections
and now wonder if I should have made one for the 50' ones. I see you say it is not very private. Are the sites close together? And is it shady? I sure hope we get shade because we have no ac in the pup.
We will be heading to SC for a family reunion the first of August and wanted to see some of the country up there so I made these plans for these two sp on the way and then from Helen we'll go onto SC then back home to N Fla. I sure hope we like HIGH fALLS and also the sp in Helen, GA. How are the roads going to Helen.. I have a fear of mountain roads..and I hate that fear because I love the mountains.

    Finally stopped raining in Fl..

We camped in Helen in the Fall but we were in a tent. I think the roads were ok, not too hilly. Hope you have a fan - GA in July and August is usually hot, muggy, and still. Many of the sights are shady, with tall trees that have a good canopy but provide very little privacy. There is a section that is newer and I imagine that those sites don't have much shade at all. The benefit is that those are close to the new b'room and have a playground in the middle of the loop.

I think I may have made a booboo when I made our reservations for
a Saturday at High Falls because we will not be able to get there until later on in the day and being a weekend and close to the interstate I'm afraid that maybe most or a lot of the better shady sites will be taken and we might not get a good site and we will be there for 5 days..but at least when we go to Helen it will be in the middle of the week and maybe it will be better. I just hope we get a shady site due to being hot and no ac in the pup..might have to keep a bowl of ice water and a rag to keep cool..huh..

You can hang out in the creek or by the Falls. It will be interesting to see how much water is in the Falls. They are low in comparison to other falls and impacted heavily by drought.

    Good Luck!

Which SP in Helen...Unicoi or Vogel? I live about 25 minutes away from Helen and have stayed at both. Just might want to take the alternate route around Helen as both parks are North of town. On the weekends, the one road thru Helen gets VERY backed up.

What part of NFL are you from? We are heading to St Joseph's SP for our big vacation this year....

We're going to Unicoi and I think our reservations are for Thursday
and not a Fri or Sat because we will be coming from High Falls SP but I forget my directions exactly but it says Hwy 129 after we get off I85 and I forget what other roads. What roads are the best route as we will be coming off I75 after Atlanta I think..forget where we actually get off. We are coming from Jacksonville, Fl and have't been in that area. Is the other State Pk better than Unicoi. I guess I didn't see that one but we'll have to check that one out too but we won't have time this trip. We haven't used the pup yet but are taking it out Sun
for a trial run to a SP close to us here. Are the roads in that area steep
or have much of an incline as we think our tv will be fine but since this is all new we're just wondering.

If you are getting there on Thursday, that is great as the campsites are first come, first serve. Helen should not be congested either. (Most weekends the 2 wheel folks take the place over.)

You will take I75 to Atlanta, then I85, then 985 towards Gainesville. You will get off 985 at exit 24, hang a left, then go to your 2nd light and hang a right onto Limestone pkwy. Limestone dead ends onto Cleveland Hwy. Hang a right and you will go to Cleveland. Once you go around the Cleveland square (kind of aggravating) you will pass a zaxby's on the right, you will take a right at the next light. Helen is 7 miles from that light. There is a grocery store at that light also. If you need any supplies, I would recommend stopping there. Helen is not a cheap place to buy staples.

Once you go through Helen, the road to Unicoi will be on your right.
None of it is tricky. Just follow the road signs.

As for which park, you will have a great time at Unicoi. There is plenty to do in the SP itself. While you are there, take a drive to the falls, there are great views there. Also, the SP lake has a beach area and hiking trails. There is fishing and many other things and Helen obviously. For tourists, I guess it is a great place, but it tends to get a little crowded for our tastes. If it was my first trip, I would definitely check out the general store, have lunch at the international cafe, and definitely hit up the bar behind Paul's (Margarita's?, I think) for cocktail hour if you are so inclined.....The great thing about Helen to me is the fact that the Chatahoochee river winds its way through the whole town. There are some great spots to just hang out, have a beer and chill by the water.

Also, if you mountain bike, there is some sweet singletrack all over your planned route....

Any other questions, just let me know...

    Wade

About High Falls, our reservations are for the lake sites I think but I see they have river sites too which they seem to have a lot of them.
Someone may go with us next month when we go but he has a big
fifth wheel and hasn't made reservations yet. I don't think he can get
a site where we made our reserv for and also I think those sites are too small for him so he will have to go to the other sites by the river, if
I'm getting this right from the website. Does anyone know the difference between the two different sites (lake vs river). And does anyone have any pictures of the cg there. Hope our friend can get in with his fifth wheel and he plans on going to Helen with us too.

If I'm remembering correctly, the lake is across the street from the main cg area. The river sites are in this bigger section. When you check in, if it is before hours, you will turn left to get to the office. After hours, you need to go to the cg host, which is a right hand turn into the bigger cg area. There was no sign; we found out after going into the convenience store when we got there after hours.
Indian Springs SP is also close to High Falls, according to the parks brochure, if you can't get a spot at HF.
Good Luck & Have a great time!

Wade, Do you or anyone know anything about Cherokee Campground which is suppose to be close to Helen, Ga? A friend of our's who owns a fifth wheel is think of coming with us when we go to Helen but he doesn't have a reservation and I see according to Unicoi web site there aren't any listed as available but I saw a listing for a Cherokee Camground...do you know much about this cg or does has anyone been there. If our friend comes with us he will probably bring his Harley in his is fifth wheel. I can't seem to find out much about this cg..

I do not know anything about that cg, but I think that Vogel State Park is also close by, as is Dahlonega, GA, so those might be other choices for you. Unicoi is often booked way in advance, as they have a lot of programs. Good Luck!

    (Is that cg in GA?)

I'm sorry I can't help you with that cg - right now, we only know about the GA State Parks and we are going to those as fast as we can. [A]

Yes, according to the information that I pulled up when I was searching for other cg's around Helen, Ga I found this one called
"Cherokee Campground" which states that it is close to Helen, Ga by maybe 5 miles. I can't find a website for it and the GS Directory only listed it but didn't give much info about it. I did find something on the web with some pictures but not much info..it might not even be there anymore. The info I got might be old..but the cg is in Georgia and it is a privately owned cg. I don't think we can put our pup and his fifth wheel on the same site. I wish he had made reservations at Unicoi when I did and then if he couldn't make it he could just cancel. I'm anxious to go..have never been to Helen, Ga before but heard a lot about it.

I just googled Cherokee Campground, Helen, GA and got this

    http://www.cherokeerv.com/

so it is still there. Your friend really only has to sleep there, and since he's in a 5th wheel, he may be "insulated" from anything that is not so great about the cg. :) There were a couple of other websites that talked about the cg, but I didn't look at them. Vogel is about 50 min. away. Traffic in Helen is often slow, as there is enough to do & stop for, and I think there is only one lane going each way.

    Good Luck!

Cherokee looks maybe a just so cg..maybe just a place to park your rv maybe but if he goes with us he will definitely need a place to park his fifth wheel. I tried to tell him that if he is going he should check with Unicoi to make a reservation but their web site doesn't even show campsite sites now only their lodge rooms. We'll check out Vogel SP but we want to try Unicoi especially since we have reserv there..maybe a cool spell will come along..that would be great. I remember one time in Pigeon Forge in late August..we got cold during the night and needed jackets and blankets to stay warm..

    Thanks for the info..
