Went here on our May 2016 trip via Black Hills, and back through ND. Had been to Hell Creek in the 60s, very primitive, and wanted to go back, it left a lasting impression (I think it was the ranger with his six shooter and bag of dead rattlesnakes!)(or was it the old wagon sticking up in the water? There's a 26 mile drive on washboard dirt roads, we got in late and it took an hour, can do it in 50 minutes pushing it. There is old bathroom/shower building, many electric sites. The sites are large, very little grows there so there's nothing between the sites, though there are a few trees now. It's sunny, in hot weather, well, yes, it'd be hell. Do your shopping ahead of time. Ice is available at marina. It's mostly a fishing campground, but not obnoxiously so, at least in May. The state is not renewing its lease with feds, so it'll revert to ACoE in 2020 or so, and it's not known what will happen to park. I strongly recommend spending a few days here!
